Hadith #8959

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Beautiful speech is proof of abundant intelligence.

Let us delve into the connotation of this statement in light of the Quran.

The word (jameel) "جَمِيلُ" in Arabic refers to something that is beautiful, pleasing, and attractive. It encompasses not only the external appearance but also the inner qualities that radiate through one's speech and actions. The word (qawl) "قَوْلِ" means speech or words. It signifies the power and impact of words in conveying messages and influencing others.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights that beautiful speech is a reflection of abundant intelligence. This implies that eloquence and wisdom in one's words are indicative of a person's intellectual capacity and depth of understanding. And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], 'Do not worship except Allah; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah.' Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing.

This verse emphasizes the importance of speaking good words to people, which includes being kind, respectful, and considerate in our interactions. Tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse encourages Muslims to choose their words wisely and speak that which is best. It reminds us that Satan seeks to create discord and division among people through harmful and hurtful speech. Therefore, speaking beautifully and positively is not only a sign of intelligence but also a means to combat the influence of Satan and promote unity among Muslims.

They were known for their eloquence, wisdom, and ability to convey profound messages in a concise and impactful manner. By emulating their example, we can strive to improve our own speech and become better representatives of Islam.
