فِكْرُ ساعَة قَصيرَة خَيْرٌ مِنْ عِبادَة طَويلَة۔
Thinking for a short while is better than prolonged worship.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Thinking And The Thinker)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
فِكْرُ ساعَة قَصيرَة خَيْرٌ مِنْ عِبادَة طَويلَة۔
This translates to
Thinking for a short while is better than prolonged worship.
Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (fikr) "فِكْرُ" in Arabic refers to contemplation, reflection, or deep thinking. It involves pondering over the signs of Allah's creation, His wisdom, and His guidance. It is an act of using one's intellect to understand the deeper meanings and purposes behind the actions and events in our lives. The word (saa'a) "ساعَة" means an hour or a short period of time, while (qaseera) "قَصيرَة" means short or brief. On the other hand, (ibadah) "عِبادَة" refers to acts of worship, devotion, and obedience to Allah.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of engaging in deep thinking and contemplation, even if it is for a short period of time, as it holds greater value than prolonged acts of worship without reflection. It highlights the significance of intellectual and spiritual growth, as well as the need to understand the purpose and wisdom behind our actions.
The Quran provides numerous verses that encourage believers to engage in deep thinking and reflection. In Surah Al-Imran (3:190), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.
This verse urges Muslims to ponder over the creation of the universe, the natural phenomena, and the cycles of day and night, as they are all signs of Allah's existence and His wisdom.
Similarly, in Surah Al-Hajj (22:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Have they not traveled through the land, and have they hearts by which to reason and ears by which to hear? Indeed, it is not the eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts.
This verse highlights the importance of using our intellect and reasoning abilities to reflect upon the world around us, to seek knowledge, and to understand the signs of Allah's presence.
Reflecting on these Quranic verses, we can understand the profound wisdom behind Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement. Engaging in deep thinking for even a short while allows us to gain insights, broaden our understanding, and develop a stronger connection with Allah. It enables us to appreciate the signs of His creation, understand His guidance, and align our actions with His will.
Prolonged acts of worship without reflection may become mechanical and devoid of true understanding and sincerity. Without contemplation, our worship can become a mere ritual, lacking the spiritual depth and transformative power that comes from connecting our hearts and minds to Allah's guidance.
By emphasizing the importance of thinking, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages Muslims to seek knowledge, reflect upon the Quran, and contemplate the signs of Allah's creation. This intellectual pursuit not only enhances our understanding of Islam but also strengthens our relationship with Allah and deepens our faith.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that spending a short period of time in deep thinking and contemplation holds greater value than prolonged acts of worship without reflection. It reminds us of the importance of engaging our intellect and understanding the purpose and wisdom behind our actions. By reflecting upon the signs of Allah's creation and pondering over His guidance, we can enhance our spiritual growth, strengthen our faith, and develop a deeper connection with our Creator. May Allah grant us the ability to engage in meaningful contemplation and may it lead us to a greater understanding of His wisdom and guidance.
