كَمْ مِنْ قائِم لَيْسَ لَهُ مِنْ قِيامِهِ إلاّ العَناءُ۔
How many of those who stand [to perform prayer] have nothing in their prayer but [physical] effort.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Prayer And One Who Stands For Prayer)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights an important aspect of prayer, specifically the physical effort that is often exerted during the act of standing for prayer. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) draws our attention to the fact that many individuals may engage in prayer, but their focus is solely on the physical aspects, rather than the spiritual essence of the prayer.
Let us delve into the words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (qa'im) "قائِم" refers to those who stand in prayer. It signifies the physical act of standing upright during the prayer. The word (qiyaamih) "قِيامِهِ" means "his standing" or "his prayer." It emphasizes the specific action of standing in prayer.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that there are individuals who engage in prayer, but their prayer is devoid of anything beyond physical effort. They may go through the motions of standing, bowing, and prostrating, but their hearts and minds are not fully present in the act of worship. Their focus is solely on the physical aspect, neglecting the spiritual connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Ma'un (Chapter 107), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes those who perform prayer with a lack of sincerity and genuine devotion:
(Quran 107:4-7)
Then woe to those who pray, but are heedless of their prayer, who make show [of their deeds], and withhold [simple] assistance.
This ayah highlights the importance of being mindful and present in our prayers. It warns against performing prayer merely as a show for others, without truly connecting with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in our hearts. It reminds us that our prayers should be sincere acts of worship, devoid of any worldly motives or distractions.
Another verse that sheds light on the essence of prayer is found in Surah Al-Baqarah (Chapter 2), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
(Quran 29:45)
Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.
This verse emphasizes the transformative power of prayer. It reminds us that prayer is not merely a physical ritual, but a means to purify our souls and protect us from immorality and wrongdoing. It is through prayer that we remember Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seek His guidance and mercy.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to go beyond the physical aspects of prayer and strive for a deeper spiritual connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It urges us to be mindful and present in our prayers, to focus on the spiritual essence rather than being consumed by the physical effort alone.
When we approach prayer with sincerity and devotion, it becomes a means of elevating our souls and strengthening our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It becomes a source of tranquility and guidance in our lives. Let us strive to embody the true spirit of prayer, aligning our hearts, minds, and bodies in worship, seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) alone. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to perform our prayers with utmost sincerity and devotion.
