— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "المعروف رق" which can be translated as

Benevolence is [a means of] servitude.

This concise statement holds a significance and highlights the significance of performing acts of goodness and kindness towards others.

To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. "Al-Ma'ruf" refers to acts of goodness, righteousness, and kindness that are recognized and accepted by society as virtuous. It encompasses all forms of benevolent actions, such as helping the needy, being kind to others, showing compassion, and fulfilling one's responsibilities towards family, friends, and the community. "Riq" means servitude or submission, indicating that engaging in acts of benevolence is a way of submitting oneself to the will of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of benevolence and its connection to servitude. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:177),

Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves...

This verse highlights that true righteousness lies in believing in Allah and performing acts of kindness towards others, especially those in need. It emphasizes the importance of selflessness and giving, even when it may require sacrificing one's own desires or wealth. By doing so, one demonstrates servitude to Allah and fulfills their duty as a Muslim.

Another verse that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

This verse reflects the importance of seeking Allah's guidance and support in performing acts of benevolence. It highlights the need for steadfastness and consistency in our efforts to serve others, as well as the reliance on Allah's sustenance and assistance.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that acts of benevolence are not merely optional or superficial gestures, but rather a fundamental aspect of our servitude to Allah. It encourages us to embody the spirit of selflessness and kindness in all aspects of our lives, recognizing that by doing so, we are fulfilling our purpose as Muslims.

When we engage in acts of benevolence, we not only benefit others but also experience personal growth and spiritual elevation. It strengthens our connection with Allah and deepens our understanding of His mercy and compassion. Moreover, acts of kindness have a ripple effect, inspiring others to follow suit and creating a positive and harmonious society.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, exemplified this Hadith through his own actions. His life was a testament to the power of benevolence and servitude. He dedicated himself to the well-being of the community, providing support to the needy, resolving disputes, and promoting justice and equality. His selfless acts of kindness continue to inspire Muslims to this day.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that acts of benevolence are not separate from our servitude to Allah, but rather an integral part of it. By engaging in acts of goodness and kindness, we submit ourselves to the will of Allah and fulfill our duty as Muslims. Let us strive to embody this principle in our daily lives, seeking opportunities to serve and uplift others, and in doing so, draw closer to our Creator. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and bless us with the ability to perform acts of benevolence.
