قَلِيلُ الْعِلْمِ مَعَ العَمَلِ خَيْرٌ مِنْ كَثيرِهِ بِلا عَمَل۔
Little knowledge accompanied with action is better than a lot of it without action.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of combining knowledge with action. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, teaches us that having a small amount of knowledge that is put into practice is far superior to having a vast amount of knowledge but failing to act upon it.
Let us delve into the words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (ilm) "عِلْمِ" refers to knowledge, which encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. It is the understanding and awareness of facts, information, and principles. The word (amal) "عَمَلِ" refers to action, deeds, and practical application of knowledge in one's life.
To support the significance of combining knowledge with action, we find numerous verses in the Quran that emphasize the importance of implementing what we learn. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:110):
You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah.
This verse highlights the importance of not only knowing what is right and wrong but actively promoting righteousness and preventing evil.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Asr (103:2-3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
These verses emphasize that true success lies in combining faith with righteous actions and encouraging others towards truth and patience.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder that knowledge alone is not sufficient. It is through the practical application of knowledge that we truly benefit ourselves and society. For example, if one possesses extensive knowledge about the importance of charity but fails to act upon it by helping those in need, their knowledge remains theoretical and lacks impact.
By implementing our knowledge, we not only strengthen our own faith and character but also inspire others to follow suit. Our actions become a reflection of our beliefs and serve as a means of spreading goodness and righteousness. Through our deeds, we can make a positive difference in the world and contribute to the betterment of society.
Conversely, having a surplus of knowledge without action can lead to arrogance, complacency, and a lack of spiritual growth. It is through the practical application of knowledge that we truly internalize its lessons and experience personal transformation. By actively engaging in righteous deeds, we develop a deeper understanding of the wisdom behind the teachings and experience the blessings that come with it.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that knowledge is not an end in itself, but a means to bring about positive change in our lives and the lives of others. It urges us to seek knowledge and then apply it in our actions, as this combination is far superior to mere accumulation of knowledge without implementation. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to seek knowledge and the strength to act upon it, so that we may strive towards righteousness and earn His pleasure.
