Hadith #5202

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

اِحْذَرُوا عَدُوّاً نَفَذَ فِي الصُّدُورِ خَفِيّاً، ونَفَثَ فِي الآذانِ نَجِيّاً۔

This thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us to be cautious of an enemy who enters the heart stealthily and whispers in the ears secretly.

Let us delve into the meanings of some important words in this Hadith. The word (nafatha) "نَفَذَ" means to penetrate or infiltrate, while (assudur) "الصُّدُورِ" refers to the chests or hearts. The word (khafiyan) "خَفِيّاً" means secretly or stealthily, and (al-athani) "الآذانِ" refers to the ears. Finally, (najiyan) "نَجِيّاً" means secretly or privately.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-A'raf (7:200), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the whispers of Satan, who tries to misguide us:

And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is Hearing and Knowing.

This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking refuge in Allah when faced with the whispers of the enemy.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Nas (114:4-5), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) teaches us to seek protection from the evil of those who whisper and withdraw:

From the evil of the retreating whisperer - Who whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind.

These verses highlight the existence of individuals who secretly infiltrate our hearts and minds, attempting to lead us astray.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be vigilant and cautious of the enemy who seeks to deceive us. This enemy can take various forms, such as the whispers of Satan, the influence of negative peer pressure, or the seductive allure of worldly desires. Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautiful saying also highlights the importance of guarding our ears against harmful influences. The ears are the gateway to our hearts and minds, and what we choose to listen to can have a significant impact on our thoughts, beliefs, and actions. It is essential to be selective in the information, conversations, and media we expose ourselves to, ensuring that they align with the teachings of Islam and promote righteousness.
