(Ghurar al-Hikam: Justice And The Just)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

شَيْئانِ لايُوزَنُ ثَوابُهُما: العَفْوُ، والعَدْلُ۔

This translates to:

Two things are such that their reward cannot be weighed: forgiveness and justice.

Let us delve into the profound meanings behind these words and explore their significance in light of the Quran.

Firstly, let us examine the word (afw) "عَفْوُ" which means forgiveness. This term encompasses the act of pardoning, overlooking, and letting go of a wrongdoing or offense. It goes beyond merely abstaining from seeking revenge or punishment, but rather entails a compassionate and merciful response towards the one who has wronged us. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of forgiveness in numerous verses of the Quran.

In Surah Al-Imran (3:134), Allah says,

Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse highlights the virtue of forgiveness and the reward it carries. By forgiving others, we demonstrate our ability to control our anger and our willingness to let go of grudges. Such actions are beloved to Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah An-Nur (24:22), Allah states,

And let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

This verse emphasizes the reciprocal nature of forgiveness. If we forgive others, Allah, in His infinite mercy, will forgive us. It is a means of seeking Allah's forgiveness and earning His pleasure.

Now, let us turn our attention to the word (adl) "العَدْلُ" which means justice. Justice is the act of treating others fairly, impartially, and equitably. It involves upholding the rights of individuals and ensuring that everyone is given their due. The concept of justice is deeply rooted in the teachings of Islam and is emphasized throughout the Quran.

In Surah An-Nisa (4:135), Allah says,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

This verse highlights the importance of upholding justice, even if it goes against our own interests or the interests of our loved ones. It reminds us that Allah's commandments take precedence over personal biases.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8), Allah says,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

This verse emphasizes the need for Muslims to be just and fair in all their dealings, regardless of the circumstances or the people involved. It reminds us that justice is an essential component of righteousness.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautifully encapsulates the profound nature of forgiveness and justice in this Hadith. By stating that their rewards cannot be weighed, he highlights their immense value and significance in the eyes of Allah. Forgiveness and justice are not only virtuous actions but also transformative forces that have the power to heal relationships, restore harmony, and bring about positive change in society.

When we forgive others, we emulate the mercy and compassion of Allah. We let go of resentment and bitterness, allowing for personal growth and spiritual elevation. Similarly, when we uphold justice, we establish a just and equitable society where the rights of all individuals are protected and respected. This fosters an environment of trust, peace, and prosperity.

As Muslims, we are called upon to embody the qualities of forgiveness and justice in our daily lives. We should strive to forgive those who have wronged us, seeking Allah's pleasure and His forgiveness in return. We should also be advocates for justice, standing up for the rights of the oppressed and marginalized. By doing so, we contribute to the betterment of society and fulfill our responsibilities as believers.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the immeasurable rewards that await those who practice forgiveness and justice. These virtues are not only essential for personal growth and spiritual development but also for the establishment of a just and compassionate society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to forgive others and uphold justice in all aspects of our lives.
