أخْسَرُ النّاسِ مَنْ رَضِيَ الدُّنيا عِوَضاً عَنِ الآخِرَةِ۔
The person who suffers the greatest loss is one who settles for this world in exchange for the Hereafter.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: People)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he states,
The person who suffers the greatest loss is one who settles for this world in exchange for the Hereafter.
Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith to better understand its depth and significance.
The word (akhsar) "أخْسَرُ" means "the greatest loss" or "the most unfortunate." It implies a sense of regret and deprivation. The word (annas) "النّاسِ" refers to "people" or "individuals." (man) "مَنْ" means "who" or "whosoever." (radiya) "رَضِيَ" means "to be pleased" or "to settle for." (ad-dunya) "الدُّنيا" refers to "this world" or "the worldly life." (iwadan) "عِوَضاً" means "in exchange for" or "as compensation." Finally, (ani) "عَنِ" means "for" or "instead of."
To further comprehend the connotation of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance and support. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:86),
Those are the ones who have bought the life of this world [in exchange] for the Hereafter, so the punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be aided.
This verse emphasizes the grave consequences of prioritizing worldly desires over the eternal rewards of the Hereafter. It highlights the regret and loss that awaits those who choose temporary pleasures over everlasting bliss.
In another verse, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:201),
But among them is he who says, 'Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.'
This verse teaches us the importance of seeking goodness in both this world and the Hereafter. It encourages us to strive for success in worldly matters while keeping our ultimate focus on the Hereafter.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we understand that settling for the fleeting pleasures and materialistic pursuits of this world at the expense of neglecting our spiritual growth and preparation for the Hereafter is the greatest loss a person can experience. By prioritizing worldly gains over the eternal rewards of the Hereafter, one risks losing the opportunity for salvation and the everlasting bliss promised by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the importance of balance in our lives. While it is essential to fulfill our worldly responsibilities and enjoy the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah, we must never lose sight of our ultimate purpose, which is to seek His pleasure and strive for success in the Hereafter.
This Hadith serves as a powerful reminder to Muslims of all backgrounds that our focus should not solely be on the temporary pleasures and pursuits of this world. Instead, we should strive to strike a balance between our worldly endeavors and our spiritual growth, ensuring that our actions and intentions are aligned with the teachings of Islam. By doing so, we can avoid the greatest loss and secure eternal success in the Hereafter.
May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to prioritize the Hereafter over this world and guide us on the path of righteousness. May we seek His pleasure in all our actions and strive for success in both this world and the Hereafter. Ameen.
