عَلَيْكَ بِالوَرَعِ فَإنَّهُ خَيْرُ صِيانَة۔
Espouse piety, for it is indeed the best protection.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Piety)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
عَلَيْكَ بِالوَرَعِ فَإنَّهُ خَيْرُ صِيانَة۔
This can be translated as:
Espouse piety, for it is indeed the best protection.
In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to embrace and uphold the quality of (al-wara') "الوَرَعِ". The term "الوَرَعِ" refers to piety, righteousness, and a sense of God-consciousness. It encompasses being cautious and mindful of one's actions, avoiding anything that may lead to sin or disobedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The importance of piety is emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13):
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous among you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse highlights that the true measure of nobility and superiority in the sight of Allah lies in righteousness and piety. It is not based on one's lineage, wealth, or worldly status. Therefore, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages Muslims to prioritize piety as it serves as a shield and safeguard against evil and wrongdoing.
Piety acts as a protective shield for individuals, guarding them against the temptations and vices of this world. It helps to maintain a strong connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and enables one to make decisions that align with His commandments. By being conscious of Allah's presence and fearing His displeasure, individuals are more likely to refrain from engaging in sinful acts.
Furthermore, piety serves as a source of motivation for Muslims to strive for excellence in their actions and character. It instills a sense of accountability and responsibility, as one realizes that every action will be accounted for on the Day of Judgment. This awareness encourages individuals to be mindful of their deeds and to seek forgiveness for any shortcomings.
The consequences of embracing piety are profound. It leads to a life of righteousness, inner peace, and contentment. By adhering to the principles of piety, individuals are able to maintain a harmonious relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and with their fellow human beings. It fosters a society built on justice, compassion, and moral values.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his deep knowledge and understanding of Islam, exemplified the quality of piety throughout his life. His unwavering devotion to Allah and his commitment to justice and righteousness serve as an inspiration for Muslims of all generations.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the significance of embracing piety as the best protection. By cultivating a sense of God-consciousness and righteousness, we can shield ourselves from the pitfalls of this world and strive towards a life that is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah guide us all to embody the qualities of piety and grant us His protection and mercy.
