اَلْمالُ فِتْنَةُ النَّفْسِ ونَهْبُ الرَّزايا۔
Wealth is the tribulation of the soul and the plunder of calamities.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Wealth And Riches)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he states,
الْمَالُ فِتْنَةُ النَّفْسِ وَنَهْبُ الرَّزَايَا
which translates to
Wealth is the tribulation of the soul and the plunder of calamities.
Let us delve into the depths of this statement and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (fitnah) "فِتْنَةُ" in this Hadith refers to a trial, a test, or a tribulation. It signifies a challenge that can potentially lead one astray or cause them to deviate from the right path. Here, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the fact that wealth can become a source of trial for the soul. When one is blessed with abundance, it can test their character, values, and priorities. It can become a means of distraction, leading them away from their spiritual journey and causing them to lose sight of their ultimate purpose in life.
To support this understanding, we find a relevant Quranic verse in Surah Al-Kahf (18:46), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Wealth and children are the adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.
This verse emphasizes that while wealth and worldly possessions may seem appealing and attractive, they should not be the ultimate goal or priority. The true measure of success lies in the lasting good deeds that one performs for the sake of Allah.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further describes wealth as (nahb al-razaya) "نَهْبُ الرَّزَايَا", which can be translated as the plunder of calamities. This phrase highlights the potential consequences and negative effects that can arise from the pursuit and accumulation of wealth. When one becomes obsessed with material possessions, they may resort to unethical means to acquire more wealth, leading to corruption, injustice, and exploitation. This can result in calamities and societal unrest, as the gap between the rich and the poor widens, and the marginalized are further oppressed.
The Quranic verse in Surah Al-Hashr (59:7) echoes this sentiment, stating,
And what Allah restored to His Messenger from the people of the towns - it is for Allah and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives and orphans and the [stranded] traveler - so that it will not be a perpetual distribution among the rich from among you. And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain from. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
This verse emphasizes the importance of wealth being used for the betterment of society, to support the needy and the vulnerable, rather than being concentrated in the hands of a few wealthy individuals.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), with his profound knowledge and wisdom, is reminding us of the potential dangers and pitfalls associated with wealth. It is not wealth itself that is inherently evil, but rather the attachment and misuse of it that can lead to spiritual and societal harm. The pursuit of wealth should be balanced with the pursuit of righteousness and the well-being of others. It should be used as a means to fulfill our responsibilities towards our families, communities, and the wider society.
In conclusion, this Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be mindful of the trials and temptations that wealth can bring. It urges us to prioritize our spiritual growth and the welfare of others over material possessions. By aligning our actions with the teachings of the Quran, we can navigate the challenges of wealth and use it as a means to bring about positive change in our lives and the lives of those around us. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to use our wealth in a manner that pleases Him and benefits humanity.
