(Ghurar al-Hikam: Visiting)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ كَثُرَتْ زِيارَتُهُ قَلَّتْ بَشاشَتُهُ۔

This Hadith can be translated as,

One whose visits increase, his cheerfulness decreases.

Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (ziyarah) "زِيَارَةُ" in Arabic refers to visiting someone or something with a specific purpose or intention. It can be a physical visit to a person, a place, or even a spiritual visit to a sacred site. The word (bashashah) "بَشَاشَةُ" means cheerfulness, happiness, or joy. Therefore, the Hadith implies that when someone's visits to others become frequent, their cheerfulness diminishes.

To understand the wisdom behind this Hadith, we can refer to the Quran. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises us,

O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.

This verse highlights the importance of maintaining good assumptions about others and refraining from backbiting or spying. When we excessively visit others, we may inadvertently fall into the trap of gossip or negative assumptions. Our constant presence in their lives can lead to a decrease in cheerfulness as we become more exposed to their flaws and shortcomings. This Hadith serves as a reminder to strike a balance in our interactions and not overstep our boundaries.

Moreover, the Quran emphasizes the importance of maintaining a positive mindset and a cheerful disposition. In Surah At-Tawbah (9:50), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And of them is he who says, 'Grant me exemption and put me not to trial.' Unquestionably, into the trial they have fallen. And indeed, Hell will encompass the disbelievers.

This verse reminds us that trials and tribulations are an inevitable part of life. However, those who constantly seek exemption from difficulties and surround themselves with constant visits may find their cheerfulness diminishing. They become overwhelmed by the challenges they encounter, as they have not developed the resilience and strength to face them.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, highlights the importance of moderation in our interactions. Excessive visits can lead to unnecessary complications and misunderstandings, ultimately affecting our own happiness. It is crucial to strike a balance between maintaining social connections and preserving our own well-being.

For instance, imagine a person who spends most of their time visiting others, constantly engaging in conversations and gatherings. While this may initially bring joy and a sense of belonging, it can eventually lead to exhaustion and a decrease in cheerfulness. The constant exposure to different opinions, conflicts, and negative energy can drain their own positivity and peace of mind.

On the other hand, someone who maintains a balanced approach to visits, focusing on quality rather than quantity, can preserve their cheerfulness. They prioritize their own well-being and mental health, ensuring that their interactions are meaningful and uplifting. By setting boundaries and being selective in their visits, they can maintain a positive mindset and avoid unnecessary stress or conflicts.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of moderation in our visits and interactions. Excessive visits can lead to a decrease in cheerfulness, as they may expose us to negativity and drain our energy. By striking a balance and setting boundaries, we can maintain our own well-being and preserve our cheerfulness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to navigate our relationships with grace and moderation.
