بَذْلُ العِلْمِ زَكاةُ العِلْمِ۔
Sharing knowledge [with those who deserve] is the alms-tax of knowledge.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
بَذْلُ العِلْمِ زَكاةُ العِلْمِ
which translates to
Sharing knowledge [with those who deserve] is the alms-tax of knowledge.
This amazing Hadith emphasizes the importance of sharing knowledge and the spiritual purification that comes with it.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (badhl) "بَذْلُ" means to give or share, while (al-'ilm) "العِلْمِ" refers to knowledge. The term (zakat) "زَكَاةُ" is derived from the root word (zaka) "زَكَى" which means to purify or cleanse. In Islamic terminology, (zakat) "زَكَاةُ" refers to the obligatory charity given by Muslims to purify their wealth.
To comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 269:
He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good. And none will remember except those of understanding.
This verse highlights that knowledge is a gift from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and those who possess it are blessed with immense goodness. However, this blessing is not meant to be hoarded or kept to oneself. It is meant to be shared with others, especially those who are deserving and seeking knowledge.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Asr, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in verse 3:
Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
This verse emphasizes the importance of advising one another towards truth and righteousness. Sharing knowledge is a form of advising and guiding others towards the path of righteousness. It is an act of kindness and a means of helping others grow spiritually and intellectually.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, understood the significance of sharing knowledge. He recognized that knowledge is not meant to be kept hidden, but rather, it should be disseminated to benefit others. By sharing knowledge, one fulfills the spiritual obligation of purifying their knowledge, just as giving zakat purifies one's wealth.
When we share knowledge with sincerity and the intention to benefit others, we not only fulfill our duty as Muslims but also contribute to the betterment of society. Knowledge has the power to transform lives, inspire change, and bring people closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It has the potential to uplift individuals, families, and communities.
By sharing knowledge, we create a ripple effect that can have far-reaching consequences. Just as a single candle can illuminate a dark room, the sharing of knowledge can dispel ignorance and bring enlightenment to those who seek it. It is through the act of sharing knowledge that we can contribute to the intellectual and spiritual growth of our fellow Muslims.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that sharing knowledge is not only a noble act but also a means of purifying our own knowledge. By sharing knowledge with sincerity and the intention to benefit others, we fulfill our duty as Muslims and contribute to the betterment of society. Let us strive to be like Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who was known for his generosity in sharing his knowledge, and may Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the ability to acquire and share beneficial knowledge.
