لَيْسَ لأنْفُسِكُمْ ثَمَنٌ إلاّ الجَنَّةُ فَلاتَبيعُوها إلاّ بِها۔
There is no price for your souls except Paradise, so do not sell them for anything but it.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لَيْسَ لأنْفُسِكُمْ ثَمَنٌ إلاّ الجَنَّةُ فَلاتَبيعُوها إلاّ بِها۔
This powerful statement emphasizes the immense value of our souls and the ultimate reward that awaits us in Paradise. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (thaman) "ثَمَنٌ" in the Hadith refers to the price or value of something. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is reminding us that our souls are priceless, and their true worth lies in attaining Paradise. This means that we should not compromise our eternal salvation for anything in this worldly life.
The Quran supports this concept in several verses. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (2:195)
And spend of your substance in the cause of Allah, and make not your own hands contribute to your destruction; but do good; for Allah loveth those who do good
This verse highlights the importance of using our resources and capabilities in a way that benefits our souls and earns us the pleasure of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (17:29)
And let not your hand be tied (like a miser) to your neck, nor stretch it forth to its utmost reach, so that you become blameworthy and destitute
This verse warns against being stingy or excessively extravagant, as both extremes can lead to spiritual harm and deprivation.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges us not to sell our souls for anything other than Paradise. This means that we should prioritize our faith and righteousness above worldly gains, desires, and temptations. It serves as a reminder that the temporary pleasures and material possessions of this world are insignificant compared to the eternal bliss of the Hereafter.
The Quran reinforces this message in Surah Al-Kahf, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (18:103-104)
Say, 'Shall We tell you of those who lose most in respect of their deeds? Those whose efforts have been wasted in this life, while they thought that they were acquiring good by their works'
This verse highlights the danger of being deluded by worldly pursuits and neglecting the true purpose of our existence.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) enlightening Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims to prioritize their spiritual journey and strive for Paradise. It encourages us to make choices and decisions that align with the teachings of Islam and lead us closer to Allah's pleasure. By valuing our souls above all else, we safeguard our faith, integrity, and eternal salvation.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that our souls are priceless and their true value lies in attaining Paradise. It urges us not to compromise our eternal salvation for worldly gains or desires. By prioritizing our faith and righteousness, we safeguard our souls and ensure a blissful Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to make choices that lead us to Paradise and protect us from selling our souls for anything but the ultimate reward.
