نِعْمَ قَرِينُ الإيمانِ اَلحَياءُ۔
The best partner of faith is modesty.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Modesty And Shame)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
نِعْمَ قَرِينُ الإيمانِ اَلحَياءُ۔
This can be translated as,
The best partner of faith is modesty.
In this enlightening Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of modesty in the context of faith.
Let us first delve into the meaning of the word (hayaa) "حَيَاء" which is translated as "modesty" in this Hadith. Hayaa encompasses a sense of shyness, bashfulness, and a deep sense of humility. It is a quality that prevents one from engaging in actions that are inappropriate or indecent. It is a shield that protects one's faith and preserves their moral character.
The significance of modesty in Islam is emphasized in the Quran as well. In Surah Al-A'raf, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (7:26)
O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best. That is from the signs of Allah that perhaps they will remember.
This verse highlights the importance of modesty in our physical appearance and behavior.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (49:11)
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse emphasizes the importance of modesty in our speech and interactions, urging us to refrain from mocking or belittling others.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the profound connection between modesty and faith. Modesty acts as a companion to faith, guiding and protecting it. When one possesses modesty, they are more inclined to adhere to the teachings of Islam and avoid actions that may compromise their faith. Modesty serves as a shield against immorality and helps to maintain a pure and righteous character.
The consequences of lacking modesty can be seen in society today. Without modesty, individuals may engage in immodest behavior, dress inappropriately, and engage in indecent speech. This can lead to a degradation of moral values and a weakening of faith. Modesty, on the other hand, promotes a sense of self-respect, dignity, and purity.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages Muslims to cultivate and nurture the quality of modesty within themselves. By embodying modesty in our actions, speech, and appearance, we not only protect our own faith but also contribute to the betterment of society as a whole. Modesty fosters an environment of respect, decency, and righteousness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of modesty as a companion to faith. Modesty acts as a shield, protecting our faith from the temptations of immorality. It is a quality that is emphasized in the Quran as well, highlighting its significance in Islam. By embodying modesty in our lives, we strive towards a higher level of piety and contribute to the establishment of a virtuous society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to cultivate and maintain modesty in all aspects of our lives.
