The cornerstone of [all] merits is knowledge.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The cornerstone of [all] merits is knowledge.

This beautiful Hadith emphasizes the immense importance of knowledge in Islam. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.

The Arabic word used in this Hadith is (fadā'il) "فَضَائِل", which refers to virtues, merits, or excellences. It encompasses all the noble qualities and attributes that a person can possess. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) asserts that knowledge is the foundation upon which all these virtues are built.

To understand the significance of knowledge, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes its value. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,

Are those who know equal to those who do not know?

This rhetorical question highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who do not. Knowledge elevates an individual, enabling them to make informed decisions and contribute positively to society.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah states,

Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.

This verse highlights that knowledge is a means of spiritual elevation. It is through knowledge that individuals can attain higher ranks in the sight of Allah.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also reminds us of the Quranic verse in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269), where Allah describes the people of knowledge as those who

bring people out of darkness into the light.

Knowledge has the power to illuminate minds, dispel ignorance, and guide individuals towards the path of righteousness.

The consequences of neglecting knowledge are evident in the Quran as well. In Surah Al-Muhammad (47:24), Allah warns,

Do they not then reflect upon the Qur'an, or are there locks upon [their] hearts?

This verse highlights the importance of reflecting upon the Quran and seeking knowledge. Neglecting this duty can lead to a spiritual stagnation, hindering one's growth and understanding of the divine message.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a motivation for Muslims to prioritize seeking knowledge in all its forms. It encompasses not only religious knowledge but also secular knowledge that can benefit individuals and society as a whole. Islam encourages Muslims to seek knowledge from cradle to grave, as Prophet Muhammad () said,

Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim.

Moreover, knowledge is not limited to theoretical understanding but also encompasses practical application. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself was a paragon of knowledge, known for his wisdom, intellect, and ability to apply knowledge in various situations. His knowledge enabled him to make just decisions, resolve conflicts, and guide the Muslim community during his caliphate.

Reflecting on the Hadith, we realize that knowledge is not merely an intellectual pursuit but a means of attaining spiritual and moral excellence. It empowers individuals to distinguish between right and wrong, to seek justice, and to contribute positively to society. By prioritizing knowledge, Muslims can strive for personal growth, upliftment, and the betterment of the world around them.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the foundational role of knowledge in acquiring virtues and merits. It aligns with the Quranic teachings that highlight the significance of knowledge in Islam. Muslims are encouraged to seek knowledge, reflect upon the Quran, and apply their understanding in their daily lives. By doing so, they can fulfill their duty as believers and contribute to the betterment of society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us all the ability to seek knowledge and benefit from it.
