Vileness is the accumulator of dispraise.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vileness)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "اللُّؤْمُ جَمّاعُ المَذامِّ۔" This can be translated as,

Vileness is the accumulator of dispraise.

To understand the meaning behind this statement, let us delve into the important words used in this Hadith.

The word (al-lu'm) "اللُّؤْمُ" refers to vileness, wickedness, or moral corruption. It encompasses all forms of evil deeds, whether they are physical or spiritual. It is a state of being morally repugnant and detestable. The word (jamma'u) "جَمّاعُ" means to accumulate or gather. It implies that vileness has the tendency to accumulate and gather more evil actions, leading to a downward spiral of immorality. Finally, the word (al-madham) "المَذامِّ" refers to dispraise or condemnation. It signifies that vileness is deserving of criticism and censure.

To further understand the implications of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:81),

And say: Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart.

This verse highlights the inherent nature of falsehood to eventually perish and fade away. Similarly, vileness, being a form of falsehood and evil, is destined to be condemned and dispraised.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:55), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it and say, 'For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. Peace will be upon you; we seek not the ignorant.'

This verse emphasizes the importance of distancing oneself from vile and negative speech. It teaches us that as Muslims, we should not engage in dispraise or participate in spreading vileness. Instead, we should focus on our own actions and seek peace and knowledge.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the consequences of vileness and its accumulation. When a person indulges in immoral actions, it becomes easier for them to continue down the path of wrongdoing. The accumulation of vileness leads to a degradation of one's character and reputation. It tarnishes their relationship with Allah and their fellow human beings. Ultimately, it results in their dispraise and condemnation.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to distance ourselves from vileness in all its forms. We should be mindful of our actions, words, and intentions, ensuring that they align with the teachings of Islam. By doing so, we can protect ourselves from the accumulation of vileness and its detrimental consequences. Let us seek the forgiveness of Allah, purify our hearts, and strive to be people of virtue and righteousness.

May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us on the path of righteousness and protect us from vileness and its consequences. May He grant us the wisdom to discern between good and evil, and the strength to resist the temptations of immorality. May we be among those who are praised and rewarded in this life and the Hereafter.
