(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to be cautious and mindful of our actions. He warns us to stay away from any act that repels a freeman from us, lowers our status, brings harm upon us, or burdens us on the Day of Judgment.

Let us delve deeper into the words used in this hadith to gain a better understanding. The word (yunaffiru) "يُنَفِّرُ" means to repel or drive away. It implies that certain actions can create a barrier between us and those around us, causing them to distance themselves from us. This can be due to the negative impact of our behavior or the harm we cause to others.

The word (yudhillu) "يُذِلُّ" means to lower or humiliate. It signifies that certain actions can diminish our status and reputation in the eyes of others. These actions may include arrogance, mistreatment of others, or engaging in unethical behavior. Such actions not only harm our relationships but also tarnish our character.

The word (yajlibu) "يَجْلِبُ" means to bring or attract. It suggests that certain actions can bring harm upon us. These actions may lead to negative consequences, both in this world and in the hereafter. For instance, engaging in dishonesty, backbiting, or indulging in sinful behavior can attract harm and misfortune into our lives.

Lastly, the phrase (tahmilu bihi ila al-qiyamati wizran)

تَحْمِلُ بِهِ إلَى القِيَامَةِ وِزْرًا

means to bear a burden on the Day of Judgment. It highlights the long-term consequences of our actions. Every action we take has a weight that will be accounted for on the Day of Judgment. Therefore, it is crucial to be mindful of our deeds and their potential consequences.

To further understand the significance of this hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11):

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse emphasizes the importance of treating others with respect and avoiding actions that may humiliate or belittle them. It reminds us that our words and actions have a lasting impact and can either strengthen or weaken our relationships.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:2), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.

This verse highlights the importance of avoiding actions that bring harm upon ourselves or others. It encourages us to work together in righteousness and piety, while cautioning against participating in sinful or aggressive behavior.

Reflecting on this hadith and the Quranic verses, we understand that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is guiding us towards a path of righteousness and mindfulness. He advises us to be aware of the consequences of our actions and to strive for behaviors that bring us closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and strengthen our relationships with others.

By avoiding actions that repel others, lower our status, bring harm upon us, or burden us on the Day of Judgment, we can cultivate a positive and harmonious environment. This not only benefits us in this world but also ensures our success in the hereafter.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to follow the guidance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and to be mindful of our actions. May He bless us with the ability to build strong and meaningful relationships based on respect, kindness, and righteousness.
