(Ghurar al-Hikam: Piety)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Piety is the basis of God-wariness.

The word used in this Hadith that requires attention is (al-wara') "الْوَرَعُ". Al-wara' can be translated as piety, righteousness, or abstaining from what is doubtful or harmful. It is a comprehensive term that encompasses both internal and external aspects of one's faith and actions.

To understand the significance of piety, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:102)

O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].

Here, the term "fear Allah" implies piety and God-consciousness. It is a reminder to constantly be aware of Allah's presence and to act in accordance with His commands.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 49:13)

Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse emphasizes that true nobility and superiority lie in righteousness and piety. It is not based on wealth, lineage, or worldly status, but rather on the level of God-consciousness and adherence to His guidance.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of piety as the foundation of God-wariness. Piety serves as a safeguard against falling into sinful or doubtful actions. It acts as a shield, protecting us from the temptations and distractions of this world. When one possesses piety, they are constantly aware of Allah's presence and strive to please Him in all aspects of their life.

Piety motivates individuals to seek knowledge and understanding of their faith. It encourages them to reflect upon their actions and make choices that align with the teachings of Islam. For example, a pious person would refrain from engaging in dishonest business practices, as they recognize that such actions are displeasing to Allah. They would also avoid backbiting and gossip, understanding that it goes against the principles of righteousness.

The consequences of piety are profound. It leads to a life of righteousness, where one's intentions and actions are in harmony with the teachings of Islam. Piety instills a sense of accountability and responsibility, as individuals are constantly mindful of their actions and their impact on themselves and others. It fosters a strong connection with Allah, as the pious constantly seek His forgiveness and guidance.

Moreover, piety serves as a source of inspiration and guidance for others. When Muslims witness the piety of their fellow believers, it encourages them to strengthen their own relationship with Allah. It creates an environment of righteousness and virtue, where individuals support and uplift one another in their spiritual journey.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of piety as the foundation of God-wariness. Piety encompasses both internal and external aspects of our faith, guiding our intentions and actions. It motivates us to seek knowledge, reflect upon our choices, and strive for righteousness. The consequences of piety are profound, leading to a life of accountability, connection with Allah, and inspiration for others. May Allah grant us the ability to cultivate and maintain piety in our lives.
