أوْقى جُنَّة اَلتَّقْوى۔
The most protective shield is God-wariness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: God-Wariness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "أوْقى جُنَّة اَلتَّقْوى۔" This can be translated as,
The most protective shield is God-wariness.
Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (awqa) "أوْقى" in this Hadith means "most protective" or "strongest." It emphasizes the unparalleled strength and effectiveness of the shield being referred to. The word (junnah) "جُنَّة" means "shield" or "protection." It symbolizes a barrier that guards and shields a person from harm or danger. And finally, the word (taqwa) "التَّقْوى" means "God-wariness" or "piety." It refers to a state of consciousness and awareness of Allah's presence, which leads to righteous actions and avoidance of sinful deeds.
The Quran frequently emphasizes the importance of taqwa and highlights its significance in protecting and guiding believers. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:102)
O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].
This verse emphasizes the necessity of taqwa as a means of protection and guidance throughout one's life.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 49:13)
Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse highlights that true nobility and superiority lie in righteousness, which is a direct result of taqwa. It is through taqwa that a person attains the highest rank in the sight of Allah.
Now, let us reflect on the meaning of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. The most protective shield, as mentioned in the Hadith, is taqwa. Just as a shield protects a person from physical harm, taqwa safeguards a believer from spiritual harm and wrongdoing. It acts as a barrier that shields one's heart, mind, and soul from the negative influences of this world.
Taqwa motivates a person to constantly be aware of Allah's presence, to strive to please Him, and to avoid actions that displease Him. It serves as a guiding light in making decisions, choosing the right path, and avoiding the pitfalls of sin. Taqwa inspires a person to fulfill their obligations towards Allah and their fellow human beings, to be just, compassionate, and honest in all their dealings.
The consequences of taqwa are immense. It leads to a life of righteousness, contentment, and inner peace. It strengthens the relationship between the believer and Allah, allowing them to experience His blessings and guidance. Taqwa also protects a person from falling into the traps of Satan and the temptations of this world. It shields them from the negative influences that can lead to moral decay and spiritual destruction.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, emphasizes the significance of taqwa as the most protective shield. His words serve as a reminder to all Muslims of the importance of cultivating God-wariness in their lives. By striving to attain taqwa, we can protect ourselves from the harms of this world and secure our place in the sight of Allah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that taqwa is the most protective shield. It acts as a barrier that safeguards us from spiritual harm and guides us towards righteousness. By cultivating taqwa, we can attain the highest rank in the sight of Allah and experience the blessings and protection that come with it. May Allah grant us the ability to develop and maintain taqwa in our lives.
