اَلعَقْلُ أجْمَلُ زِينَة، والعِلْمُ أشْرَفُ مَزِيَّة۔
The intellect is the most beautiful adornment and knowledge is the most honourable merit.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intellect)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The intellect is the most beautiful adornment and knowledge is the most honourable merit.
This impactful saying highlights the importance and value of intellect and knowledge in the life of a Muslim.
Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (intellect) "عَقْلُ" refers to the ability to reason, understand, and make sound judgments. It is a gift from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) that distinguishes humans from other creatures. The word (adornment) "زِينَة" signifies something that beautifies and enhances one's appearance or character. And the word (knowledge) "عِلْمُ" refers to the acquisition of information, understanding, and wisdom.
The Quran emphasizes the significance of intellect and knowledge in numerous verses. For instance, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
He grants wisdom to whom He pleases, and whoever is granted wisdom is indeed given a great good.
This verse highlights that wisdom, which is a product of intellect and knowledge, is a great blessing from Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:14), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And We gave knowledge to David and Solomon, and they both said, 'Praise be to Allah, Who has preferred us above many of His believing servants!'
This verse exemplifies how knowledge is a means of attaining a higher status in the sight of Allah.
Now, let us reflect on the impactful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. The intellect, being the most beautiful adornment, implies that it is through the proper use of our intellect that we can enhance our character and conduct. It is the intellect that guides us towards righteousness, helps us make wise decisions, and enables us to distinguish between right and wrong.
Moreover, knowledge being the most honourable merit signifies that seeking knowledge is a noble pursuit. It is through knowledge that we gain a deeper understanding of our religion, our purpose in life, and the world around us. Knowledge empowers us to fulfill our duties as Muslims and contribute positively to society.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a motivation for Muslims to prioritize the development of their intellect and the acquisition of knowledge. By doing so, we can strive to become better individuals, make informed decisions, and positively impact our communities.
The consequences of neglecting the intellect and knowledge are evident in society. Without intellect, individuals may fall into ignorance, superstition, and blind following. Without knowledge, individuals may lack the understanding and wisdom to navigate the challenges of life and fulfill their responsibilities as Muslims.
Therefore, Muslims should strive to cultivate their intellect by seeking knowledge from authentic sources, engaging in critical thinking, and continuously learning and reflecting upon the teachings of Islam. By doing so, we can adorn ourselves with the most beautiful adornment and attain the most honourable merit.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of intellect and knowledge in the life of a Muslim. It encourages us to develop our intellect and seek knowledge as a means of beautifying our character and attaining a higher status in the sight of Allah. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with intellect and knowledge and enable us to utilize them for the betterment of ourselves and humanity.
