Bad character alienates the near one and repels the distant one.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Character)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights the detrimental effects of bad character on our relationships. The Arabic word (su'u al-khulq) "سُوءُ الخُلْقِ" refers to the negative or bad traits of a person's character. It encompasses qualities such as dishonesty, arrogance, anger, envy, and other vices that harm relationships.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that bad character

alienates the near one and repels the distant one.

This means that such negative traits create distance and animosity between people, regardless of their proximity or distance from one another. It is important to note that this Hadith is not limited to familial or social relationships, but encompasses all interactions between individuals.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of good character and warn against the consequences of bad character. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11):

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse highlights the importance of refraining from ridiculing, insulting, or using offensive nicknames towards others. It emphasizes the need for respect and kindness in our interactions, as these negative behaviors are considered disobedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Another verse that supports the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is found in Surah Al-Isra (17:53):

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse encourages us to speak in the best manner, promoting good character and avoiding any form of discord or conflict. It highlights the role of Satan in inciting animosity and division among people, emphasizing the importance of maintaining good character to counteract his influence.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement holds great wisdom and practicality. When we possess bad character traits, such as being dishonest, arrogant, or envious, we create a negative environment around us. People are naturally repelled by such behavior, leading to strained relationships and a lack of trust.

For example, if a person consistently lies, their friends and family will begin to doubt their words and intentions. This will create distance and alienation, even among those who are close to them. Similarly, if someone is arrogant and belittles others, people will naturally avoid their company, leading to isolation and a lack of meaningful connections.

Conversely, when we embody good character traits, such as honesty, humility, and kindness, we attract people towards us. Good character fosters trust, respect, and love, creating strong and harmonious relationships. People are naturally drawn to those who possess these qualities, regardless of their proximity or distance.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) profound insight reminds us of the importance of self-reflection and self-improvement. It encourages us to constantly evaluate our character and strive to embody the noble qualities taught by Islam. By doing so, we can cultivate healthy and meaningful relationships with those around us, fostering a harmonious society based on love, respect, and compassion.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in purifying our character and grant us the ability to embody the teachings of the Quran and the noble example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
