ذِكْرُ المَوْتِ يُهَوِّنُ أسْبابَ الدُّنْيا۔
Remembrance of death makes the means [and comforts] of this world seem trivial.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Death)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of remembering death. The Arabic phrase (dhikr al-mawt) "ذِكْرُ المَوْتِ" translates to "remembrance of death." The word (yuhawwinu) "يُهَوِّنُ" means
to make something seem trivial or insignificant.
And (asbab ad-dunya) "أسْبابَ الدُّنْيا" refers to the means and comforts of this worldly life.
To understand the connotation of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Imran, verse 185:
Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection.
This verse highlights the certainty of death and the ultimate accountability we will face in the Hereafter. When we remember death, it serves as a powerful reminder of the temporary nature of this world and the importance of preparing for the eternal life to come.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 64, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.
This verse highlights the fleeting nature of worldly pleasures and the true significance of the Hereafter. When we remember death, it helps us prioritize our actions and focus on the everlasting rewards of the Hereafter rather than being consumed by the temporary distractions of this world.
The remembrance of death has profound implications for our lives as Muslims. It serves as a powerful motivator to engage in acts of worship, seek forgiveness, and strive for righteousness. When we are aware of the inevitability of death, we are more likely to prioritize our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and strive to live a life that pleases Him.
Moreover, the remembrance of death also helps us put worldly matters into perspective. It reminds us that the material possessions, status, and comforts of this world are temporary and insignificant compared to the eternal blessings of the Hereafter. This realization enables us to detach ourselves from the allure of worldly distractions and focus on what truly matters in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
When we reflect on the consequences of the Hadith, we realize that the remembrance of death leads to a transformation in our mindset and behavior. It helps us develop a sense of urgency in seeking forgiveness, performing good deeds, and rectifying our relationships. It encourages us to live a life of purpose and meaning, constantly striving to improve ourselves and benefit others.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of remembering death. By contemplating the certainty of death and the transient nature of this world, we are able to prioritize our actions and focus on the eternal rewards of the Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to remember death and live our lives in accordance with His guidance.
