(Ghurar al-Hikam: Calmness and Solemnity)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Solemnity is the ornament of the intellect.

This wise utterance emphasizes the importance of maintaining a dignified and composed demeanor, as it enhances the intellect and reflects the inner wisdom of an individual.

The word (waqar) "وَقَار" in Arabic refers to solemnity, dignity, and composure. It encompasses a sense of grace, respect, and self-control. It is the state of being dignified and composed in one's behavior, speech, and actions. This quality is not only an external manifestation but also an inner characteristic that reflects the depth of one's intellect.

To understand the significance of solemnity, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, do not put [yourselves] before Allah and His Messenger but fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing.

This verse emphasizes the importance of maintaining reverence and respect for Allah and His Messenger (). It reminds us to be mindful of our actions and to conduct ourselves with dignity and humility.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:1-2), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the characteristics of successful believers, saying,

Certainly will the believers have succeeded: They who are during their prayer humbly submissive.

This verse highlights the importance of humility and solemnity in acts of worship, particularly in prayer. It reminds us that a composed and dignified demeanor during prayer enhances our connection with Allah and deepens our spirituality.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that solemnity is the ornament of the intellect. When one possesses the quality of solemnity, it reflects their inner wisdom and intellectual depth. It is a manifestation of their ability to control their emotions, maintain composure, and think rationally in various situations.

Solemnity enables an individual to make sound judgments, weigh the consequences of their actions, and respond to challenges with wisdom and patience. It allows them to navigate through life's complexities with grace and dignity, earning the respect and admiration of others.

For example, when faced with adversity, a person who possesses solemnity will not be easily swayed by emotions or react impulsively. Instead, they will approach the situation with a calm and collected mindset, analyzing the circumstances and making decisions based on wisdom and rationality. This quality enables them to find effective solutions and maintain their integrity even in the face of difficulties.

Moreover, solemnity enhances one's ability to communicate effectively. When engaging in discussions or debates, a person who maintains a composed and dignified demeanor is more likely to express their thoughts and opinions in a respectful and persuasive manner. They can articulate their ideas clearly, listen attentively to others, and engage in constructive dialogue that promotes understanding and unity.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of solemnity as the ornament of the intellect. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining a dignified and composed demeanor, which reflects the inner wisdom and intellectual depth of an individual. By embodying this quality, Muslims can navigate through life's challenges with grace, make sound judgments, and communicate effectively. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to cultivate solemnity in our lives and enhance our intellects.
