(Ghurar al-Hikam: Foolishness)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

لايُدْرَكُ مَعَ الْحُمْقِ مَطْلَبٌ۔

This Hadith can be translated as,

With foolishness, what is sought is not achieved.

Let us delve into the significance of this statement in light of the Quran.

The word (ma'a) "مَعَ" in the Hadith means "with" or

in the presence of.

It signifies that when foolishness is present, the desired goal or objective cannot be attained. The term (al-humq) "الْحُمْقِ" refers to foolishness or stupidity. It refers to a lack of wisdom, understanding, and sound judgment.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Anfal, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:105)

And do not be like the ones who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to them. And those will have a great punishment

This verse highlights the consequences of foolishness and division among the believers. When individuals lack wisdom and understanding, they become divided and fail to achieve their goals.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 2:11-12)

And when it is said to them, 'Do not cause corruption on the earth,' they say, 'We are but reformers.' Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive it not

This verse emphasizes the ignorance and foolishness of those who claim to be reformers but end up causing corruption. Their lack of wisdom blinds them to their own destructive actions.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims about the importance of wisdom and understanding in achieving their goals. When individuals act foolishly or lack wisdom, they are unable to attain what they seek. This can be applied to various aspects of life, including personal relationships, decision-making, and seeking knowledge.

For example, if a person approaches a conflict or disagreement with foolishness, without considering the perspectives of others or seeking a peaceful resolution, they are unlikely to achieve a harmonious outcome. Similarly, if a student approaches their studies with a lack of wisdom, failing to understand the concepts and apply critical thinking, they will struggle to achieve academic success.

The consequences of foolishness can be far-reaching. It can lead to misunderstandings, conflicts, and missed opportunities. Conversely, wisdom and understanding enable individuals to make informed decisions, navigate challenges, and achieve their desired objectives.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was renowned for his immense knowledge and wisdom. His teachings and actions serve as a beacon of guidance for Muslims. By reflecting on his words in this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of seeking knowledge, cultivating wisdom, and avoiding foolishness in all aspects of our lives.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)

With foolishness, what is sought is not achieved

emphasizes the significance of wisdom and understanding in attaining our goals. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to seek knowledge, make informed decisions, and avoid acting foolishly. By embodying the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can strive for success and righteousness in this world and the hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us wisdom and understanding in all our endeavors.
