Hadith #4839

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The felicity of a man is in safeguarding his faith and working for his Hereafter.

This enlightening Hadith emphasizes the importance of two fundamental aspects of a Muslim's life: preserving one's faith and striving for success in the Hereafter.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by examining the key words and concepts it presents. The word (felicity) "سَعادَةُ" refers to a state of true happiness and contentment, which can only be attained through the fulfillment of one's spiritual obligations. (a man) "الرَّجُلِ" signifies that this message is applicable to all individuals, regardless of their gender or social status.

The Hadith highlights two essential components for achieving felicity. The first is (safeguarding his faith) "إحْرازِ دينِهِ", which emphasizes the significance of protecting and preserving one's faith. This entails adhering to the principles and teachings of Islam, avoiding sinful actions, and continuously seeking knowledge to strengthen one's iman (faith). Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in the Quran, (Quran 2:208)

O you who have believed, enter into peace completely and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy

This verse emphasizes the importance of safeguarding our faith by staying away from the temptations and influences that may lead us astray.

The second aspect highlighted in the Hadith is (working for his Hereafter) "العَمَلِ لآخِرَتِهِ". This refers to the continuous effort and dedication towards performing righteous deeds that will benefit us in the eternal life to come. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in the Quran, (Quran 29:7)

And those who believe and do righteous deeds - We will surely remove from them their misdeeds and will surely reward them according to the best of what they used to do

This verse emphasizes the importance of not only believing but also actively engaging in good deeds to secure our place in the Hereafter.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, highlights the significance of these two aspects in attaining true felicity. By safeguarding our faith and working for our Hereafter, we align ourselves with the teachings of Islam and strive to fulfill our purpose in this world. This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their spiritual growth and focus on the ultimate goal of attaining success in the Hereafter.

The consequences of neglecting these two aspects are grave. If one fails to safeguard their faith, they may fall into the traps of disbelief, hypocrisy, or sinful behavior, which can lead to spiritual and moral degradation. Similarly, neglecting to work for the Hereafter can result in a life solely focused on worldly pursuits, leading to a loss of perspective and purpose.

Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are encouraged to evaluate their lives and assess whether they are truly prioritizing their faith and working towards their Hereafter. It serves as a reminder to continuously seek knowledge, perform good deeds, and strive for spiritual growth. By doing so, we can attain true felicity in this life and the Hereafter, as we fulfill our purpose as servants of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to safeguard our faith and work diligently for our Hereafter. May He guide us on the straight path and grant us success in this life and the Hereafter.
