حَسَبُ المَرْءِ عِلْمُهُ، وجَمالُهُ عَقْلُهُ۔
The distinction of a person is [by] his knowledge and his beauty is his intellect.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Human Being)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
حَسَبُ المَرْءِ عِلْمُهُ، وجَمالُهُ عَقْلُهُ۔
This beautiful saying emphasizes the importance of knowledge and intellect in defining a person's distinction and beauty. Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith to gain a better understanding.
The word (hasabu) "حَسَبُ" means "the distinction" or "the measure." It refers to the qualities that set a person apart and make them unique. In this context, it signifies the attributes that make a person truly beautiful and honorable.
The word (ilmuhu) "عِلْمُهُ" means "his knowledge." Knowledge is a fundamental aspect of human growth and development. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. The acquisition of knowledge is not only a means of personal growth but also a means of benefiting society as a whole. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge in the Quran.
In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,
Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who do not. It reminds us that knowledge is a means of enlightenment and guidance.
Similarly, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah says,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse emphasizes the elevated status of those who possess knowledge. It indicates that knowledge is a means of spiritual elevation and closeness to Allah.
The second part of the Hadith states, (wajaluhu 'aqluhu) "وجَمالُهُ عَقْلُهُ", which means
his beauty is his intellect.
Here, (jamaaluhu) "جَمالُهُ" refers to a person's beauty, not just in physical appearance but also in character and conduct. It is the inner beauty that radiates through one's actions and words.
The word (aqluhu) "عَقْلُهُ" refers to intellect or rationality. It represents the ability to think critically, make sound judgments, and act wisely. A person's intellect is a reflection of their inner beauty and is a key factor in their overall distinction.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of intellect and wisdom. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269), Allah says,
He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good.
This verse highlights the value and virtue of wisdom, which is closely linked to intellect.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:14), Allah says,
And when he [Moses] came to the fire, he was called, 'O Moses, indeed, I am your Lord, so remove your sandals. Indeed, you are in the sacred valley of Tuwa.'
This verse narrates the encounter of Prophet Moses (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) with Allah. It showcases the intellect and wisdom of Prophet Moses, as he recognized the sacredness of the place and obeyed the command of Allah.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that true distinction and beauty lie in knowledge and intellect. It encourages us to seek knowledge, both religious and worldly, and to develop our intellects. By doing so, we can attain a higher level of understanding, make informed decisions, and contribute positively to society.
Knowledge and intellect empower individuals to navigate through life's challenges, make a positive impact, and fulfill their responsibilities as Muslims. They enable us to understand the teachings of Islam, apply them in our lives, and convey them to others. Moreover, knowledge and intellect help us to discern between right and wrong, to seek justice, and to promote peace and harmony.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of knowledge and intellect in defining a person's distinction and beauty. It encourages Muslims to seek knowledge and develop their intellects, as these qualities are essential for personal growth, societal progress, and spiritual elevation. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with knowledge and wisdom and enable us to use them for the betterment of ourselves and humanity.
