Hadith #7845

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

عِنْدَ مُعايَنَةِ أهْوالِ القِيامَةِ تَكْثُرُ مِنَ المُفَرِّطينَ النَّدامَةُ۔

This Hadith highlights the state of regret that many individuals will experience when they witness the horrors of the Day of Reckoning.

Let us delve into the meanings of some important words in this Hadith. The word (mufarritin) "مُفَرِّطينَ" refers to those who go to extremes or exceed the limits. In this context, it signifies those who have transgressed in their actions and have gone beyond the boundaries set by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The word (nadamah) "النَّدامَةُ" translates to regret or remorse. It represents the deep sense of sorrow and remorse that individuals will feel upon realizing the consequences of their actions on the Day of Judgment.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that shed light on the concept of regret and remorse. In Surah Al-Hadeed, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (57:13)

And on the Day the hypocrite men and hypocrite women will say to those who believed, 'Wait for us that we may acquire some of your light.' It will be said, 'Go back behind you and seek light.' And a wall will be placed between them with a door, its interior containing mercy, but on the outside of it is torment. The hypocrites will call to the believers, 'Were we not with you?' They will say, 'Yes, but you afflicted yourselves and awaited [misfortune for us] and doubted, and wishful thinking deluded you until there came the command of Allah. And the Deceiver deceived you concerning Allah.'

This verse highlights the regret and remorse of the hypocrites who will seek the light of the believers on the Day of Judgment. However, they will be denied access and separated from the believers due to their own actions and doubts. This serves as a reminder that regret and remorse will be of no avail on that day, as the consequences of one's actions will have already been determined.

Another verse that emphasizes the consequences of regret is found in Surah Al-Qasas, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (25:27-29)

And [mention] the Day when the wrongdoer will bite on his hands [in regret] he will say, 'Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way. Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken that one as a friend. He led me away from the remembrance after it had come to me. And ever is Satan, to man, a deserter.'

This verse depicts the regret of the wrongdoer who will bite his hands in remorse, wishing that he had followed the guidance of the Messenger (ﷺ). It highlights the consequences of being led astray by misguided companions and the influence of Satan. It serves as a warning to Muslims to choose their companions wisely and to seek the guidance of the Prophet (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we understand that on the Day of Reckoning, when the horrors and consequences of our actions become apparent, many individuals will be overwhelmed with regret. This regret will stem from their realization that they have transgressed the boundaries set by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and have failed to fulfill their obligations as Muslims.

It is crucial for us as Muslims to reflect on our actions and strive to avoid falling into the category of those who show extreme regret on the Day of Judgment. We must constantly evaluate our deeds, seeking forgiveness for our shortcomings and striving to adhere to the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). By doing so, we can hope to avoid the remorse and regret that will be experienced by those who have transgressed the limits set by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to reflect on our actions and seek His forgiveness, so that we may be saved from the regret and remorse on the Day of Reckoning.
