— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Appointed Time Of Death)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

أصْدَقُ شَيْ ء اَلأجَلُ۔

This can be translated as:

The truest thing is death.

In this enlightening Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the undeniable reality of death, emphasizing its absolute certainty and truthfulness.

To understand the significance of this statement, let us delve into the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:57):

Every soul will taste death. Then to Us will you be returned.

This verse reminds us that death is an inevitable fate that awaits every human being. It is a universal truth that transcends all boundaries and distinctions.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran (3:185), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.

This verse emphasizes the temporary nature of worldly life and highlights the ultimate reality of death as the gateway to the eternal life of the Hereafter.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to all Muslims of the transient nature of this worldly existence. It urges us to reflect upon the purpose of our lives and the inevitability of our eventual return to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Death is the ultimate truth that we cannot escape, and it serves as a powerful motivator for us to strive for righteousness and prepare for the Hereafter.

When we contemplate the truest thing being death, it compels us to reassess our priorities and focus on what truly matters. It reminds us to detach ourselves from the materialistic pursuits of this world and instead invest in deeds that will benefit us in the eternal life to come. It encourages us to seek knowledge, perform acts of worship, and engage in acts of kindness and compassion towards others.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, understood the profound implications of this statement. He lived his life in accordance with this understanding, constantly striving to fulfill his duties as a servant of Allah and a leader of the Muslim community. His unwavering commitment to the truth and his readiness to sacrifice for the sake of Islam serve as exemplary lessons for all Muslims.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)

The truest thing is death

serves as a powerful reminder of the inevitable reality that awaits us all. It urges us to reflect upon the purpose of our lives, prioritize our actions, and prepare for the Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to live our lives in accordance with this truth and may He bless us with a good end.
