زيادَةُ الدُّنيا تُفْسِدُ الآخِرَةَ۔
Increase in [one’s desire for] this world corrupts the Hereafter.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
زيادَةُ الدُّنيا تُفْسِدُ الآخِرَةَ۔
This can be translated as:
Increase in [one’s desire for] this world corrupts the Hereafter.
To understand the meaning of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words and their implications. The word (ziyadah) "زيادَةُ" refers to an increase or augmentation. It signifies a growth or intensification in something. In this context, it refers to the excessive desire for worldly possessions, wealth, and materialistic pursuits.
The term (ad-dunya) "الدُّنيا" refers to the temporal world, the life of this world, and all its transient pleasures and attractions. It encompasses worldly possessions, status, fame, and everything that distracts us from our ultimate purpose and destination.
The phrase (tufsidu al-akhirah) "تُفْسِدُ الآخِرَةَ" means to corrupt or spoil the Hereafter. It implies that an excessive attachment to the worldly life leads to the deterioration and destruction of our spiritual well-being and our prospects for eternal salvation. It hinders our progress towards attaining the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the rewards of the Hereafter.
This profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) finds its resonance in several verses of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us against becoming too attached to the material world and neglecting our spiritual growth. In Surah Al-Taghabun, Allah says: (Quran 64:15)
Know that your wealth and your children are but a trial and that Allah has with Him a great reward.
This verse reminds us that worldly possessions and relationships are merely tests from Allah, and our true reward lies in the Hereafter.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Kahf, Allah narrates the story of the man with two gardens. When the man became arrogant and boastful about his worldly possessions, he neglected to acknowledge Allah's blessings and failed to prepare for the Hereafter. Allah says: (Quran 18:35-36)
And he entered his garden while he was unjust to himself. He said, 'I do not think that this will perish - ever. And I do not think the Hour will occur. And even if I should be brought back to my Lord, I will surely find better than this as a return.'
This serves as a cautionary tale, reminding us of the consequences of prioritizing worldly gains over our spiritual journey.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims. It highlights the importance of striking a balance between our worldly responsibilities and our spiritual obligations. While it is not inherently wrong to seek success and prosperity in this world, it becomes detrimental when our desires for worldly possessions consume us and divert our attention from the Hereafter.
Excessive attachment to the material world can lead to a multitude of negative consequences. It can lead to arrogance, greed, and a neglect of our duties towards Allah and our fellow human beings. It can blind us to the transient nature of this world and prevent us from preparing for the eternal life that awaits us. It can also hinder our ability to cultivate virtues such as generosity, compassion, and humility.
Conversely, when we prioritize our spiritual well-being and seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we are able to navigate the challenges of this world with wisdom and integrity. We are able to use our worldly possessions and resources as a means to serve Allah and benefit society. Our focus shifts from accumulating wealth for its own sake to utilizing it for the betterment of ourselves and others.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to strike a balance between their worldly pursuits and their spiritual journey. It warns against excessive attachment to the material world, as it can corrupt our Hereafter. By prioritizing our spiritual growth and using our worldly possessions in accordance with the teachings of Islam, we can attain true success and eternal happiness. May Allah guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
