Hadith #5746

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

بِالصِّدْقِ والوَفاءِ تَكْمُلُ المُرُوءَةُ لأهْلِها۔

This can be translated as,

By honesty and loyalty, magnanimity becomes complete for its possessor.

Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith. (sidq) "صِدْقِ" refers to honesty, truthfulness, and sincerity. It is the quality of being truthful in one's words and actions. (wafa') "وَفَاءِ" means loyalty, faithfulness, and fulfilling one's commitments. It is the act of remaining steadfast in fulfilling promises and obligations.

To understand the beautiful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:1),

O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.

This verse emphasizes the importance of fulfilling one's commitments and being loyal to one's promises. It highlights the significance of (wafa') "وَفَاءِ" mentioned in the Hadith.

Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:85),

And to [the people of] Madyan [We sent] their brother Shu'ayb. He said, 'O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. And do not decrease from the measure and the scale. Indeed, I see you in prosperity, but indeed, I fear for you the punishment of an all-encompassing Day.'

In this verse, Prophet Shu'ayb (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises his people to be honest and just in their dealings. He warns them against decreasing from the measure and the scale, which refers to cheating and dishonesty in trade. This highlights the importance of (sidq) "صِدْقِ" mentioned in the Hadith.

Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. The Hadith teaches us that true magnanimity and nobility of character can only be achieved through the combination of honesty and loyalty. When a person is honest in their words and actions, and remains loyal to their commitments and responsibilities, they attain a level of greatness that is admired and respected by others.

Honesty is the foundation of all virtues. It is the quality that builds trust and integrity. When a person is truthful and sincere, they earn the respect and admiration of those around them. This is why Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands us to fulfill our contracts and promises, as mentioned in the Quranic verse.

When a person remains steadfast in their commitments and obligations, they demonstrate their loyalty and devotion. This balance leads to the completion of magnanimity, which is the quality of being generous, noble, and honorable. A person who possesses this combination of virtues becomes a role model for others, inspiring them to strive for excellence in their own lives.

The consequences of embodying the qualities of honesty and loyalty are far-reaching. It not only enhances one's personal character but also has a positive impact on society as a whole. When individuals are honest and loyal, trust is established, relationships are strengthened, and communities thrive. This is the essence of a truly noble and magnanimous society.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith teaches us that true magnanimity can only be achieved through the combination of honesty and loyalty.
