(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vices And Those Who Commit Them)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of abstaining from vices in order to attain elevated ranks. Let us delve into the exegesis of this amazing Hadith in light of the Quran.

The key word in this Hadith is (sayyiat) "سَيِّئَاتِ", which refers to vices or evil deeds. It encompasses any action that goes against the teachings of Islam and leads to spiritual degradation. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to refrain from engaging in such actions.

The Hadith highlights the significance of avoiding vices by promising the attainment of (rafi'a al-darajat) "رَفِيعَ الدَّرَجَاتِ", which translates to elevated ranks. This implies that by abstaining from vices, Muslims can ascend to higher spiritual levels and gain proximity to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The Quran supports this concept of attaining elevated ranks through righteousness. In Surah Al-Mu'minun, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 23:1-3)

Indeed, successful are the believers, who are humble in their prayers, and who turn away from ill speech

This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding negative speech and actions, which are considered vices. By doing so, believers can achieve success and elevated ranks in the sight of Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 7:8-9)

And the weighing [of deeds] that Day will be the truth. So those whose scales are heavy - it is they who will be the successful. And those whose scales are light - they are the ones who will lose themselves for what injustice they were doing toward Our verses

This verse highlights the importance of performing righteous deeds and avoiding vices. Those whose scales are heavy with good deeds will attain success and elevated ranks, while those whose scales are light due to their vices will face the consequences of their actions.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their actions and to strive for righteousness. By abstaining from vices, we can elevate our spiritual status and draw closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This not only benefits us in the Hereafter but also has positive effects on our character and relationships in this world.

When we refrain from vices such as lying, backbiting, cheating, and indulging in unlawful activities, we cultivate a sense of integrity, trustworthiness, and sincerity. This, in turn, strengthens our relationships with others and fosters a harmonious society based on justice and compassion.

Moreover, avoiding vices leads to a sense of inner peace and contentment. When we are free from the burden of guilt and remorse, our hearts become tranquil, and we experience a deeper connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This spiritual elevation allows us to navigate the challenges of life with patience, gratitude, and resilience.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of abstaining from vices in order to attain elevated ranks. By avoiding evil deeds and striving for righteousness, we can not only achieve success in the sight of Allah but also cultivate positive character traits, strengthen our relationships, and experience inner peace. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to stay away from vices and elevate our ranks in this world and the Hereafter.
