لَمْ يَذْهَبْ مِنْ مَالِكَ مَا وَعَظَكَ۔
The wealth that teaches you lesson does not go waste.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #196)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
لَمْ يَذْهَبْ مِنْ مَالِكَ مَا وَعَظَكَ۔
This Hadith can be translated as:
The wealth that teaches you a lesson does not go waste.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in the light of the Quran. The word (malika) "مَالِكَ" in this Hadith refers to wealth or possessions. It encompasses not only material possessions but also knowledge, skills, and abilities that one possesses. It is important to note that wealth is not inherently good or bad; rather, its value lies in how it is acquired and utilized.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286):
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse reminds us that every trial and hardship we face, including the acquisition and management of wealth, is within our capacity to handle. It is through these experiences that we learn valuable lessons and grow as individuals.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran (3:186), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
You will certainly be tested in your possessions and in yourselves.
This verse emphasizes that wealth is a means of testing our character and faith. It is through the challenges and lessons that wealth brings that we have the opportunity to develop virtues such as generosity, gratitude, and responsibility.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the importance of utilizing wealth in a manner that enriches our knowledge and understanding. When we use our wealth to gain knowledge, whether through seeking education, supporting educational institutions, or investing in intellectual pursuits, we are investing in our own personal growth and development. This aligns with the Quranic injunction to seek knowledge and reflect upon the signs of Allah in the universe.
Moreover, the Hadith reminds us that the wealth that teaches us a lesson does not go to waste. This means that when we face challenges or losses in our wealth, we should not despair or feel defeated. Instead, we should reflect on the lessons learned from those experiences and use them as opportunities for personal and spiritual growth. Just as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) tests us with wealth, He also provides us with the means to learn and benefit from those tests.
For example, if we experience financial losses, we can learn the importance of financial planning, risk management, and the transient nature of worldly possessions. This knowledge can lead to a more balanced and mindful approach to wealth management, where we prioritize the eternal rewards of the Hereafter over temporary material gains.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith teaches us that wealth, when used wisely and with the intention of seeking knowledge and personal growth, becomes a valuable asset. It is through the lessons learned from our wealth and possessions that we can cultivate virtues and deepen our understanding of Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) wisdom and guidance. Let us strive to utilize our wealth in a manner that brings us closer to Allah and benefits both ourselves and our fellow Muslims. May Allah bless us with the wisdom to make the best use of our wealth and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
