مَنْ طَلَبَ مِنَ الدُّنيا شَيْئاً، فاتَهُ مِنَ الآخِرَةِ أكْثَرُ مِمّا طَلَبَ۔
One who seeks something from this world is eluded by something greater from the Hereafter than what he seeks [from this world].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the consequences of prioritizing worldly desires over the Hereafter. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, warns us that those who seek materialistic gains in this world will ultimately miss out on the greater rewards of the Hereafter.
Let us delve into the words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (talaba) "طَلَبَ" means to seek or desire, while (minad-dunya) "مِنَ الدُّنيا" refers to this worldly life. The phrase (fatahu) "فاتَهُ" means to be eluded or deprived, and (mimma talaba) "مِمّا طَلَبَ" translates to
from what he seeks.
To comprehend the enlightening message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 200:
So when you have completed your rites, remember Allah like your [previous] remembrance of your fathers or with [much] greater remembrance.
This verse emphasizes the importance of remembering Allah and seeking His pleasure over worldly desires, as the remembrance of Allah holds greater significance.
Furthermore, Surah Al-Kahf, verse 46 states:
Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.
This verse highlights the temporary nature of worldly possessions and the importance of focusing on enduring good deeds that will bring greater rewards in the Hereafter.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their efforts and intentions towards the Hereafter. When we become too engrossed in seeking worldly gains, we risk losing sight of the true purpose of our existence and the eternal rewards that await us in the Hereafter.
For instance, if a person becomes overly consumed with accumulating wealth, they may neglect their spiritual obligations, such as performing acts of worship, giving in charity, or seeking knowledge. This neglect can lead to a spiritual void and a lack of fulfillment in their lives. On the other hand, if one focuses on seeking the pleasure of Allah and performing righteous deeds, they will find contentment and fulfillment in this world and the Hereafter.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith also serves as a reminder of the consequences of our choices. When we prioritize worldly desires, we may attain temporary satisfaction, but we risk missing out on the everlasting rewards of the Hereafter. This Hadith encourages Muslims to reflect on their intentions and actions, ensuring that they align with the teachings of Islam and the pursuit of the Hereafter.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of prioritizing the Hereafter over the temporary pleasures of this world. By seeking the pleasure of Allah and focusing on righteous deeds, we can attain true fulfillment and eternal rewards. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to make choices that lead us closer to Him and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
