Never be frequently alone with women, for they will become weary of you and you will also become weary of them, and leave a part of yourself and your mind to tarry [away] from them.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Women)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us against frequently being alone with women. To understand the deeper meaning of this statement, let us delve into the important words and concepts mentioned in this Hadith.
The word (khalwah) "خَلْوَةَ" refers to seclusion or being alone with someone. It implies a private and intimate setting where there are no other individuals present. The word (nisaa) "نِسَاءِ" means women. It is important to note that the Hadith does not specify whether these women are unrelated or not, as the general principle applies to all women.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns against frequently engaging in such seclusion with women, as it can lead to weariness and fatigue. This weariness can be both physical and emotional, affecting both parties involved. When individuals spend excessive time alone with each other, the initial excitement and novelty may fade away, leading to a sense of boredom or monotony. This can strain relationships and cause dissatisfaction.
To support this guidance, we can turn to the Quran for further insight. In Surah Al-Isra (17:32), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises believers to avoid approaching adultery, saying,
And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.
This verse emphasizes the importance of maintaining boundaries and avoiding situations that may lead to immoral behavior.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:53), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) addresses the wives of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and instructs them to speak from behind a screen when conversing with men. This verse highlights the need for modesty and the importance of maintaining appropriate social interactions.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice is rooted in the Quranic teachings of maintaining modesty, avoiding temptation, and preserving the sanctity of relationships. By refraining from frequent seclusion with women, we protect ourselves and others from potential harm and maintain the integrity of our relationships.
It is important to note that this guidance does not imply a complete prohibition on interactions between men and women. Islam encourages healthy and respectful interactions between genders within the boundaries of modesty and Islamic ethics. However, excessive seclusion can lead to undesirable consequences, as mentioned in the Hadith.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises against frequently being alone with women, highlighting the potential weariness and strain that can arise from such situations. This guidance aligns with the Quranic teachings of maintaining modesty, avoiding temptation, and preserving the sanctity of relationships. By adhering to these principles, Muslims can cultivate healthy and respectful interactions while safeguarding their own well-being and the well-being of others. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to understand and implement these teachings in our lives.
