اَلعَقْلُ مَنْفَعَةٌ، والعِلْمُ مَرْفَعةٌ، والصَّبْرُ مَدْفَعَةٌ۔
Intelligence is an advantage, knowledge is an elevation and patience is a defence [and a means of repelling hardships].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intellect)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Intelligence is an advantage, knowledge is an elevation and patience is a defence [and a means of repelling hardships].
This thought-provoking saying highlights the importance of three key qualities: intelligence, knowledge, and patience. Let us delve into the meanings of these words and explore their significance in light of the Quran.
Firstly, the word (intelligence) "عَقْلُ" refers to the ability to think, reason, and make sound judgments. It encompasses wisdom, discernment, and the capacity to understand and apply knowledge. The Quran emphasizes the importance of intelligence in numerous verses. For example, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
He grants wisdom to whom He pleases, and whoever is granted wisdom is indeed given a great good.
This verse highlights that intelligence is a divine gift and a means of attaining goodness in this world and the hereafter.
Secondly, the word (knowledge) "عِلْمُ" refers to the acquisition of information, understanding, and awareness. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who are ignorant. Knowledge elevates individuals, broadens their horizons, and enables them to make informed decisions.
Lastly, the word (patience) "صَبْرُ" refers to the ability to endure hardships, trials, and tribulations with steadfastness and perseverance. Patience is not simply passive acceptance, but an active virtue that empowers individuals to face challenges with resilience and fortitude. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of patience. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah].
This verse highlights that patience is a means of seeking assistance from Allah in times of difficulty.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the interconnectedness of these three qualities. Intelligence serves as an advantage because it enables individuals to make wise decisions based on sound judgment. Knowledge acts as an elevation because it raises individuals to higher levels of understanding, awareness, and spiritual growth. Patience serves as a defense and a means of repelling hardships because it empowers individuals to endure challenges and overcome obstacles with resilience.
For example, imagine a person faced with a difficult decision. Their intelligence allows them to analyze the situation, consider the potential outcomes, and make a wise choice. Their knowledge, acquired through learning and experience, provides them with the necessary information to make an informed decision. Finally, their patience enables them to endure any challenges or hardships that may arise as a result of their decision, without losing hope or giving up.
Furthermore, these qualities are not isolated virtues but are interconnected and reinforce one another. Intelligence without knowledge may lead to misguided decisions, while knowledge without patience may result in frustration and despair. Similarly, patience without intelligence and knowledge may lead to passivity or resignation in the face of difficulties.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of intelligence, knowledge, and patience in the life of a Muslim. These qualities are not only advantageous and elevating but also serve as a defense against hardships. By cultivating these qualities, Muslims can make wise decisions, acquire knowledge, and face challenges with resilience and perseverance. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody these qualities and seek His guidance in all aspects of our lives.
