قَدْ يَضُرُّ الكَلامُ۔
Speech may, at times, be harmful.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Speech And Speaking)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "قَدْ يَضُرُّ الكَلامُ۔" This Hadith can be translated into English as,
Speech may, at times, be harmful.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The word (kalam) "كَلَامُ" in this Hadith refers to speech or words. It encompasses both verbal and written communication. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the potential harm that can arise from our words. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious and mindful of the impact our speech can have on others.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of using our words wisely and responsibly. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:53),
And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.
This verse encourages Muslims to choose their words carefully and speak in a manner that is pleasing to Allah. It reminds us that Satan seeks to create discord and division through our speech, and we must strive to counteract his influence by using our words for good.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:83), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against spreading falsehood and engaging in slander. He says,
And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], 'Do not worship except Allah; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah.' Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing.
This verse emphasizes the importance of speaking good words and refraining from spreading falsehood. It highlights the negative consequences that can arise from harmful speech, such as causing division and turning people away from the path of righteousness.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the potential harm that can be inflicted through our words. Our speech has the power to either build bridges or create barriers between individuals. It can either spread love, kindness, and understanding, or it can sow seeds of discord, hatred, and misunderstanding.
When we reflect on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, we realize that it encompasses a wide range of situations where harmful speech can occur. It includes spreading rumors, engaging in gossip, backbiting, slander, and using hurtful or offensive language. It also extends to the realm of social media, where words can be disseminated rapidly and have far-reaching consequences.
Harmful speech can lead to broken relationships, damaged reputations, and emotional pain for both the speaker and the recipient. It can create a toxic environment where trust and unity are eroded. Conversely, when we choose our words carefully and speak with kindness and empathy, we can foster an atmosphere of love, understanding, and harmony.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautiful Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of the power of their words. It calls upon us to reflect on the consequences of our speech and to strive for excellence in our communication. By doing so, we can contribute to the betterment of society and fulfill our duty as ambassadors of Islam.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to use our words wisely and grant us the ability to speak with kindness, compassion, and wisdom. May He protect us from the harm that can arise from our speech and enable us to be a source of goodness and positivity in the world.
