— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Trustworthiness)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his family (Ahl al-Bayt), and his companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

الأمانَةُ فَوْزٌ لِمَنْ رَعاها(وَعاها)

which translates to

Trustworthiness is a success for the one who observes it.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of trustworthiness and highlights the great reward and success that comes to those who uphold this noble quality.

The word (al-amānah) "الأمانَةُ" refers to trustworthiness, integrity, and fulfilling one's responsibilities. It encompasses being honest, reliable, and loyal in fulfilling entrusted duties, whether they are personal, social, or professional. Trustworthiness is a fundamental trait that forms the basis of strong relationships and societies.

The phrase (fawzun liman ra'ahā) "فَوْزٌ لِمَنْ رَعاها(وَعاها)" can be translated as

success for the one who observes it.

The word (fawzun) "فَوْزٌ" refers to success, triumph, and attaining a favorable outcome. It implies achieving prosperity and contentment in both this world and the Hereafter. The phrase (liman ra'ahā) "لِمَنْ رَعاها(وَعاها)" emphasizes that this success is for those who actively safeguard and uphold trustworthiness.

The importance of trustworthiness is emphasized in the Quran as well. In Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:1), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.

This verse highlights the obligation of fulfilling promises and contracts, which is a manifestation of trustworthiness. By honoring our commitments, we demonstrate our integrity and reliability.

Additionally, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:85), the story of Prophet Shu'aib (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is mentioned. He advised his people,

And give full measure and weight in justice and do not deprive the people of their due and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption.

This verse emphasizes the importance of being just and fair in our dealings, which is a reflection of trustworthiness. By being honest in our transactions and interactions, we contribute to a just and harmonious society.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize trustworthiness in all aspects of their lives. When individuals are trustworthy, it fosters an environment of trust and reliability within families, communities, and societies. Trustworthiness builds strong bonds and enables cooperation, leading to the growth and prosperity of individuals and communities.

Observing trustworthiness has numerous positive consequences. It enhances personal and professional relationships, as people feel secure and confident in dealing with trustworthy individuals. Trustworthy individuals are sought after for leadership positions and entrusted with important responsibilities. They become role models for others, inspiring them to also uphold trustworthiness.

Moreover, trustworthiness has spiritual implications. By fulfilling our responsibilities and being trustworthy, we align ourselves with the teachings of Islam and the example set by the Prophet Muhammad () and his family (Ahl al-Bayt). It is a means of seeking the pleasure of Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and attaining success in the Hereafter.

Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims should strive to be trustworthy in all aspects of their lives. Whether it is fulfilling promises, honoring contracts, or being honest in our interactions, trustworthiness should be a guiding principle. By doing so, we not only attain success in this world but also earn the pleasure of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and secure our success in the Hereafter.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be trustworthy and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
