Do not plunge into the surge (or fire) of sedition that comes your way, and move away from its path while opening up the middle of the road for it [to pass].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Important Events)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound guidance for Muslims, cautioning them against the dangers of plunging into the surge of sedition or fitnah. The Arabic word "fitnah" refers to a trial, tribulation, or discord that can lead to chaos and confusion within society. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us not to hastily engage in such fitnah, but rather to move away from its path and open up the middle of the road for it to pass.
To understand the depth and significance of this advice, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46),
And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
This ayah emphasizes the importance of obedience to Allah and His Messenger, and discourages engaging in disputes that can weaken the Muslim community.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises,
And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
This ayah highlights the importance of resolving conflicts and disputes in a just and fair manner, rather than engaging in sedition or violence.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice in the Hadith aligns perfectly with these Quranic teachings. He urges Muslims not to hastily plunge into the surge of fitnah, which can lead to further discord and chaos. Instead, he advises us to move away from its path, avoiding unnecessary conflict and violence. By opening up the middle of the road for fitnah to pass, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to maintain peace and stability within society.
This guidance from Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is rooted in his deep knowledge and understanding of Islam. He was known for his wisdom, justice, and ability to navigate through challenging situations. By following his advice, Muslims can avoid falling into the traps of fitnah and instead strive for unity, justice, and peace.
The consequences of disregarding Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice can be seen throughout history. When individuals and communities engage in sedition and violence, the fabric of society is torn apart, leading to bloodshed, division, and suffering. However, when Muslims adhere to the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt, they can overcome fitnah and work towards a harmonious and prosperous society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a timeless reminder for Muslims to exercise caution and wisdom when faced with fitnah. By moving away from its path and opening up the middle of the road for it to pass, we can preserve peace, unity, and justice within our communities. Let us reflect upon this profound advice and strive to follow in the footsteps of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), the epitome of knowledge and wisdom in Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the straight path and protect us from the dangers of fitnah.
