جَعَلَ اللّهُ لِكُلِّ شَيْء قَدْراً ولِكُلِّ قَدْر أجَلاً۔
Allah has set for everything a measure, and for every measure a [specified] term.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Divine Decree And Destiny)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
جَعَلَ اللّهُ لِكُلِّ شَيْء قَدْراً ولِكُلِّ قَدْر أجَلاً۔
This can be translated as,
Allah has set for everything a measure, and for every measure a [specified] term.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this impactful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of the Quran.
The word (qadr) "قَدْر" in this Hadith refers to the concept of measure or destiny. It signifies that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has assigned a predetermined measure for everything in the universe. This measure encompasses the characteristics, limits, and boundaries of each creation. It is a reflection of Allah's infinite wisdom and knowledge, as He has perfectly determined the nature and purpose of all things.
The term (ajal) "أجَلاً" in the Hadith refers to a specified term or appointed time. It implies that every measure set by Allah has a designated period or duration. This highlights the temporal aspect of creation, emphasizing that everything in this world has a limited lifespan or existence. It reminds us that our time on this earth is finite and that we will ultimately return to our Creator.
The concept of measure and term mentioned in this Hadith finds resonance in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes His control over all things and His precise determination of their measures and appointed times. For example, in Surah Al-Hijr (15:21), Allah says,
And there is nothing but its stores are with Us, and We do not send it down except in a known measure.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-An'am (6:59), Allah states,
And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record.
These verses highlight Allah's comprehensive knowledge and control over every aspect of creation. He has complete awareness of even the minutest details, and nothing occurs without His knowledge and permission. This reinforces the idea that everything in the universe, including its measures and terms, is under Allah's divine decree.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the profound wisdom behind Allah's creation. It teaches us that every aspect of our existence has been meticulously planned and designed by our Creator. This understanding should instill in us a sense of humility and gratitude towards Allah, as we recognize His infinite knowledge and wisdom.
Moreover, this Hadith also serves as a reminder of the transient nature of worldly life. The term appointed for each creation signifies that everything in this world has a limited duration. This realization should prompt us to reflect upon the purpose of our existence and prioritize our actions accordingly. We should strive to make the most of our time in this world by engaging in righteous deeds and seeking closeness to Allah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the concept of measure and term in Allah's creation. It highlights Allah's precise determination of the characteristics and limits of all things, as well as the appointed time for each measure. This concept is supported by various Quranic verses that emphasize Allah's comprehensive knowledge and control over all aspects of creation. Reflecting on this Hadith should deepen our understanding of Allah's wisdom and prompt us to lead a purposeful and righteous life. May Allah grant us the ability to comprehend His divine decree and live our lives in accordance with His guidance.
