قَدْ تُذِلُّ الرَّزِيَّةُ۔
At times, tribulation may abase [a person].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Hardships)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "قَدْ تُذِلُّ الرَّزِيَّةُ۔" which translates to
At times, tribulation may abase [a person].
This thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the reality that even the most honorable and dignified individuals may experience moments of hardship and humiliation.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words and concepts present. The word (tudhillu) "تُذِلُّ" refers to the act of humiliating or abasing someone. It signifies a state of being brought down or reduced in status or dignity. The term (ar-razīyah) "الرَّزِيَّةُ" refers to honor, respect, or prestige. It represents the elevated position and reputation that an individual may possess.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us of the transient nature of worldly possessions and status. In Surah Al-Hadid (57:20), Allah says,
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris.
This verse emphasizes that worldly honor and prestige are fleeting and temporary. They can easily be diminished or lost. Just as a plant withers and turns yellow after the rain, the status and reputation of a person can also fade away. Therefore, it is essential for Muslims to prioritize the pursuit of eternal virtues and the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) rather than being solely focused on worldly recognition.
Another verse that sheds light on the concept mentioned in the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Imran (3:186), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
You will surely be tested in your possessions and in yourselves. And you will surely hear from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allah much abuse. But if you are patient and fear Allah - indeed, that is of the matters [worthy] of determination.
This verse reminds Muslims that tribulations and hardships are an inevitable part of life. They serve as tests from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to assess our patience, faith, and perseverance. It is during these trials that one's true character and strength are revealed. Therefore, it is crucial for Muslims to remain steadfast in their faith, seek solace in Allah's guidance, and trust in His wisdom and mercy.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder that even the most honorable and righteous individuals may face moments of humiliation and adversity. This does not diminish their worth or righteousness in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Rather, it is a test of their patience, resilience, and reliance on Allah's guidance.
The consequences of understanding and internalizing this profound Hadith are manifold. Firstly, it reminds Muslims to remain humble and grounded, recognizing that worldly honor and prestige are transient. It encourages us to prioritize the pursuit of eternal virtues and the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) over seeking validation from others.
Furthermore, this Hadith teaches us to be empathetic and compassionate towards those who are experiencing tribulations and humiliation. It reminds us not to judge others based on their current circumstances, as their true worth lies in their faith, character, and relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to remain steadfast in the face of tribulations and to prioritize the pursuit of eternal virtues. It teaches us the transient nature of worldly honor and prestige and encourages us to seek validation from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) alone. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to navigate through the challenges of life and to remain steadfast on the path of righteousness.
