وَيْحَ العاصي ما أجْهَلَهُ وعَنْ حَظِّهِ ما أعْدَلَهُ۔
Woe be to the sinner, how ignorant he is and how much of his share he has relinquished!
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vices And Those Who Commit Them)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he expresses his lament for the sinner, highlighting their ignorance and the loss they incur by deviating from the path of righteousness. Let us delve into the deeper meanings of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The word (woe be) "وَيْحَ" in Arabic is a powerful expression of sorrow and regret. It conveys a sense of deep concern and compassion for the sinner, as Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) recognizes the dire consequences of their actions. This word serves as a wake-up call, urging Muslims to reflect on the gravity of their sins and the potential harm they bring upon themselves.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then describes the sinner as (how ignorant he is) "ما أجْهَلَهُ". This emphasizes the lack of knowledge and understanding that leads one astray. Ignorance here refers not only to a lack of information but also to a lack of spiritual insight and awareness. The sinner fails to comprehend the true consequences of their actions and the damage it inflicts upon their soul.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of knowledge and understanding in the Quran. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who are ignorant. The sinner, due to their lack of knowledge, fails to recognize the severity of their actions and the consequences they entail.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further states, (and how much of his share he has relinquished)
وعَنْ حَظِّهِ ما أعْدَلَهُ
This phrase draws attention to the loss incurred by the sinner. By engaging in sinful behavior, the sinner forfeits their rightful share of blessings, rewards, and spiritual growth. They miss out on the abundant mercy and blessings that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has prepared for those who adhere to His commands.
The Quran provides numerous verses that highlight the consequences of sin and the loss incurred by those who deviate from the path of righteousness. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:27), Allah says,
But those who break the covenant of Allah after contracting it and sever that which Allah has ordered to be joined and spread corruption on earth - for them is the curse, and they will have the worst home.
This verse emphasizes the severe consequences of breaking the covenant with Allah and engaging in corrupt actions.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we can see that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is urging Muslims to be mindful of their actions and the potential harm they may cause. He emphasizes the importance of knowledge and understanding in guiding one towards righteousness. By recognizing the consequences of sin and the loss it incurs, Muslims are encouraged to seek knowledge, reflect on their actions, and strive for spiritual growth.
In conclusion, this Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be aware of the consequences of their actions and the importance of knowledge in guiding their behavior. It highlights the ignorance of the sinner and the loss they incur by deviating from the path of righteousness. By reflecting on this Hadith and seeking knowledge from the Quran, Muslims can strive to avoid sin, seek forgiveness, and attain spiritual growth. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the straight path and protect us from ignorance and sin.
