مَنْ بَحَثَ عَنْ أسْرارِ غَيْرِهِ أظْهَرَ اللّهُ أسْرارَهُ۔
Whoever searches for the secrets of others, Allah uncovers his own secrets.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Flaws And Faults)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Whoever searches for the secrets of others, Allah uncovers his own secrets.
This profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the consequences of prying into the private affairs of others. To fully understand the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words.
The word (bahatha) "بَحَثَ" in Arabic means to search, investigate, or inquire. It implies a deliberate and active effort to uncover the hidden aspects of someone's life. The word (asrar) "أسْرارِ" refers to secrets or private matters that are not meant to be disclosed or shared with others. It encompasses personal, intimate, and confidential information that individuals have a right to keep to themselves.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns that those who engage in prying into the secrets of others will have their own secrets exposed by Allah. This serves as a reminder that Allah is the All-Knowing and All-Seeing, and nothing remains hidden from Him. He has full knowledge of our innermost thoughts, intentions, and actions. Therefore, it is futile and counterproductive to engage in such behavior, as it only leads to negative consequences.
This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasizes the importance of respecting the privacy and dignity of others. Allah says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12),
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
Here, Allah cautions against making assumptions about others and engaging in backbiting or spying. Such actions are likened to consuming the flesh of one's own brother, which is repulsive and detestable. This verse emphasizes the importance of refraining from prying into the private affairs of others and instead focusing on self-improvement and fostering positive relationships.
Another verse that supports the message of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), where Allah says,
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse highlights the importance of respecting the dignity and honor of others. It discourages mocking, insulting, or belittling others based on assumptions or private matters. It reminds us that we should not judge others without knowledge and that Allah is the ultimate judge of our actions.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a powerful reminder to Muslims to refrain from prying into the secrets of others. Engaging in such behavior not only violates the rights and privacy of individuals but also invites the exposure of our own secrets by Allah. It is a call to focus on self-improvement, fostering positive relationships, and respecting the dignity and privacy of others.
May Allah guide us to follow the teachings of the Quran and the noble example of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt. May He protect us from engaging in prying into the secrets of others and bless us with the ability to cultivate a culture of respect, compassion, and understanding among Muslims.
