اَلمَعْرُوفُ كَنْزٌ۔
Benevolence is a treasure.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "المعروف كنز" which translates to
Benevolence is a treasure.
Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word "ma'ruf" in Arabic refers to acts of goodness, kindness, and righteousness. It encompasses all forms of virtuous deeds that are pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It includes acts of charity, compassion, justice, and any action that brings benefit to others. The word "kanz" means treasure, indicating that benevolence holds immense value and significance.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of benevolence in numerous verses. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (2:110)
And establish prayer and give zakah and whatever good you put forward for yourselves - you will find it with Allah. Indeed, Allah of what you do, is Seeing
This verse highlights the concept of giving in charity and performing acts of goodness, which are considered treasures in the sight of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (2:245)
Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned
This verse emphasizes the idea that acts of benevolence are like loans given to Allah, and He multiplies the rewards for them in this world and the Hereafter.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith highlights the immense value and significance of benevolence. It teaches us that acts of goodness are not only beneficial for others but also hold great rewards in the sight of Allah. Just as a treasure is something of great value and worth, so too is benevolence in the eyes of Allah.
When we engage in acts of benevolence, we are following the footsteps of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who were known for their compassion, generosity, and selflessness. By embodying these qualities, we strive to emulate the noble character of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who was renowned for his knowledge, wisdom, and justice.
The consequences of practicing benevolence are far-reaching. Not only do our actions bring relief and happiness to those in need, but they also purify our souls and strengthen our connection with Allah. Acts of kindness and charity have the power to transform societies, fostering a culture of compassion and solidarity among Muslims.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of incorporating benevolence into our daily lives. Whether it is through acts of charity, helping those in need, or simply spreading kindness, we have the opportunity to accumulate treasures in the sight of Allah. Let us strive to be people of benevolence, following the example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and seeking the pleasure of Allah in all that we do.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to practice benevolence and may He accept our efforts. Ameen.
