(Ghurar al-Hikam: Thinking And The Thinker)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

طُولُ الفِكْرِ يُحْمِدُ العَواقِبَ،وَ يَسْتَدْرِكُ فَسادَ الأُمُورِ

which translates to

Lengthy contemplation makes the end results praiseworthy and prevents the corruption of matters.

Let us delve into the meaning of some important words in this Hadith. "طُولُ الفِكْرِ" refers to lengthy contemplation or deep thinking. "يُحْمِدُ" means to praise or commend. "العَواقِبَ" refers to the end results or outcomes. "يَسْتَدْرِكُ" means to prevent or avoid. And "فَسادَ الأُمُورِ" refers to the corruption or deterioration of matters.

To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran, verse 191,

Those who remember Allah while standing, sitting, and lying on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, saying, 'Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.'

This verse emphasizes the importance of contemplation and reflection. Muslims are encouraged to ponder upon the creation of the heavens and the earth, recognizing that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) did not create anything without purpose. By engaging in deep thought, we can gain a greater understanding of the world around us and the wisdom behind Allah's creation.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hashr, verse 18, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

This verse highlights the importance of contemplating our actions and their consequences. Muslims are urged to reflect on their deeds and consider the long-term effects they may have. By doing so, we can make conscious choices that lead to praiseworthy outcomes and avoid the corruption or negative consequences that may arise from heedlessness.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the significance of deep thinking and contemplation. Lengthy contemplation allows us to thoroughly analyze a situation, consider various perspectives, and make informed decisions. It prevents hasty actions that may lead to unfavorable outcomes or the corruption of matters.

For example, before embarking on a business venture, a Muslim should engage in thoughtful deliberation, considering the potential risks, benefits, and ethical implications. By doing so, they can make informed choices that align with Islamic principles and lead to praiseworthy results.

Similarly, in matters of personal relationships, lengthy contemplation can prevent misunderstandings, conflicts, and the deterioration of bonds. By taking the time to understand the feelings and perspectives of others, we can foster harmony and strengthen our connections with fellow Muslims.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of deep thinking and contemplation. By engaging in lengthy reflection, we can make informed decisions, prevent corruption, and achieve praiseworthy outcomes. This aligns with the Quranic teachings that emphasize the significance of pondering upon Allah's creation and considering the consequences of our actions. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to engage in thoughtful contemplation and guide us towards actions that lead to success in this world and the Hereafter.
