Hadith #7935

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "تَأَمُّلُ العَيْبِ عَيْبٌ۔" This can be translated as,

Scrutinizing the faults of others is a fault [in itself].

Let us delve into the profound wisdom contained within this statement and explore its implications in light of the Quran.

The word (ta'amul) "تَأَمُّلُ" refers to the act of carefully examining or scrutinizing something. It implies a deep analysis and observation of the faults or shortcomings of others. The word (al-'ayb) "العَيْبِ" means faults or defects. It encompasses any imperfections or weaknesses that a person may possess.

This Hadith emphasizes the negative consequences of excessively focusing on the faults of others. It serves as a reminder to Muslims that it is not befitting for a believer to engage in fault-finding or to constantly criticize others. Such behavior is considered a fault in itself, as it goes against the principles of kindness, compassion, and unity that Islam promotes.

The Quran provides guidance on this matter, reminding us to be mindful of our own faults before pointing out those of others. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames.

This verse highlights the importance of refraining from mockery and belittlement, as it can lead to division and animosity among Muslims. It encourages us to recognize the potential goodness in others, even if they may have apparent faults. By focusing on our own self-improvement and treating others with respect and dignity, we foster an environment of unity and harmony within the Muslim community.

Furthermore, the Quran teaches us to be forgiving and compassionate towards others. In Surah An-Nur (24:22), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give [aid] to their relatives and the needy and the emigrants for the cause of Allah, and let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

This verse reminds us of the importance of forgiveness and overlooking the faults of others. It encourages us to extend our help and support to those in need, regardless of their shortcomings. By doing so, we emulate the mercy and forgiveness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and increase our chances of receiving His forgiveness.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, advises us to refrain from scrutinizing the faults of others. By doing so, he emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and self-improvement. Instead of focusing on the flaws of others, we should redirect our attention towards our own spiritual growth and development.
