اَلْمَلَلُ (المُلْكُ) يُفْسِدُ الأُ خُوَّةَ۔
Irritation (or kingship) corrupts brotherhood.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Irritation)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Al-malal (al-mulk) yufsidu al-ukhuwwah.
This can be translated as,
Irritation (or kingship) corrupts brotherhood.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word "malal" refers to irritation or annoyance, while "mulk" can be understood as kingship or authority. The term "ukhuwwah" signifies brotherhood or unity. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the detrimental effect that the pursuit of power and authority can have on the bond of brotherhood among Muslims.
This concept is beautifully echoed in the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of unity and warns against division and discord. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah says, (Quran 3:103)
And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.
This verse emphasizes the necessity of unity among Muslims and the avoidance of anything that may cause division.
Furthermore, the Quran teaches us that true brotherhood is based on faith and righteousness, rather than worldly positions of power. In Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah says, (Quran 49:10)
Indeed, the believers are brothers. So make peace between your brothers and fear Allah that you may receive mercy.
This verse emphasizes the importance of maintaining peace and harmony among believers, regardless of their social or political status.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us about the corrupting influence of power and authority on brotherhood. When individuals become consumed by their desire for power, they may prioritize their personal interests over the collective welfare of the Muslim community. This can lead to divisions, conflicts, and the erosion of the bonds of brotherhood.
History bears witness to the truth of this Hadith. Throughout the centuries, we have seen how power struggles and the pursuit of authority have caused divisions and conflicts among Muslims. Whether it is on a global scale or within our own communities, the desire for power can lead to animosity, mistrust, and the breakdown of unity.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, understood the dangers of allowing power to corrupt brotherhood. He himself faced numerous challenges during his caliphate, yet he always prioritized justice, equality, and the well-being of the Muslim ummah. His leadership was guided by the principles of Islam, and he sought to establish a society based on unity, compassion, and righteousness.
As Muslims, we must reflect on the profound wisdom contained in this Hadith. We should strive to prioritize brotherhood and unity over personal ambitions and power struggles. We should be vigilant against any actions or attitudes that may lead to division and discord within our communities.
Let us remember the words of Allah in Surah Al-Anfal, (Quran 3:103)
And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.
May Allah guide us to uphold the true spirit of brotherhood and protect us from the corrupting influence of power. May He grant us the wisdom to prioritize unity and work together for the betterment of the Muslim ummah.
