Hadith #3725

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Indeed man (in this world) is only a target that is struck by [the arrows of] death and a booty that is rushed towards by tribulations and calamities.

This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the transient nature of worldly life and the trials and tribulations that human beings inevitably face.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of the words used in this Hadith. The word (gharad) "غَرَضٌ" refers to a target or an object that is aimed at. In the context of this Hadith, it symbolizes the vulnerability of human beings to the arrows of death. The word (tantadhiluhu) "تَنْتَضِلُهُ" means to be struck or hit by something. To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:64),

And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.

This verse emphasizes the temporary nature of worldly life and the importance of focusing on the eternal life of the Hereafter.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.

This verse highlights the inevitability of trials and tribulations in this world. It serves as a reminder that these difficulties are a test from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and that patience and perseverance are rewarded.

Just as an arrow strikes a target, death will eventually reach each and every one of us. Just as looters rush towards valuable spoils, tribulations and calamities rush towards us. These difficulties can come in various forms, such as loss of wealth, health, or loved ones. It is through facing these trials with steadfastness and trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) that we can grow spiritually and strengthen our connection with Him.
