(Ghurar al-Hikam: Enmity And The Enemy)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ شاقَّ وعِرَتْ عَلَيْهِ طُرُقُهُ، وأعْضَلَ عَلَيْهِ أمْرُهُ، وضاقَ عَلَيْهِ مَخْرَجُهُ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the consequences of showing enmity towards others. It explains that when a person harbors animosity and ill-will towards others, their paths in life become rugged, their affairs become difficult, and their way out of challenges becomes narrow.

To understand the meaning of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words and their implications. The word (shaqqa) "شاقَّ" refers to someone who shows enmity or hostility towards others. This enmity can manifest in various forms, such as hatred, grudges, or ill intentions. The word (wa'irat) "وعِرَتْ" means paths or ways. Here, it symbolizes the different avenues and opportunities that a person encounters in their life journey.

When a person chooses to show enmity towards others, their paths become rugged. This means that the smoothness and ease with which they could navigate through life's challenges and opportunities are compromised. Their actions and decisions become hindered, and they face obstacles and difficulties along their chosen paths.

Furthermore, the Hadith states that their affair becomes difficult. This refers to the overall state of their life and affairs. When one harbors enmity, their relationships with others become strained, and conflicts arise. This not only affects their personal relationships but also impacts their professional and social interactions. As a result, their affairs become complicated and problematic.

Moreover, the Hadith highlights that their way out becomes narrow. This implies that when faced with difficulties or challenges, those who show enmity towards others find it hard to find a solution or escape from their predicaments. Their options become limited, and they may feel trapped in their circumstances.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10),

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.

This verse emphasizes the importance of maintaining brotherhood and unity among believers. It encourages resolving conflicts and disputes in a peaceful manner. By doing so, one can avoid the rugged paths, difficult affairs, and narrow way out mentioned in the Hadith.

Additionally, the Quran reminds us in Surah Al-Isra (17:53) that enmity and hatred towards others can lead to disastrous consequences. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse highlights the role of Satan in instigating discord and enmity among people. It urges us to choose our words and actions wisely, promoting peace and harmony instead of animosity.

Reflecting on the exegesis of this Hadith, we realize the profound impact that our attitudes and actions towards others can have on our own lives. When we choose to show enmity, we not only harm our relationships but also bring difficulties upon ourselves. Conversely, by fostering love, compassion, and unity, we pave the way for smoother paths, easier affairs, and broader solutions to our challenges.

As Muslims, it is essential for us to internalize the teachings of this Hadith and strive to embody the qualities of forgiveness, empathy, and kindness. By doing so, we can create an environment of peace and harmony, both within ourselves and in our interactions with others. May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to follow the path of righteousness and protect us from the pitfalls of enmity.
