(Ghurar al-Hikam: Falsehood And Assisting It)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

لايَعِزُّ مَنْ لَجَأ إلَى الباطِلِ۔

This can be translated as,

One who resorts to falsehood does not become powerful.

Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (layaizzu) "لايَعِزُّ" in this Hadith is derived from the root word (izz) "عزّ", which means power, honor, or dignity. It refers to the state of being respected, esteemed, and influential. The word (man) "مَنْ" means "one who" or "whoever." (laja'a) "لَجَأ" means to resort to or seek refuge in. And finally, (al-batil) "الباطِلِ" means falsehood or falsehoods.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of truthfulness and warns against falsehood. Allah says in Surah Al-Isra (17:81),

And say, 'Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart.'

This verse highlights the transient nature of falsehood and its ultimate defeat in the face of truth.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hajj (22:30), Allah says,

That [has been commanded], and whoever honors the sacred ordinances of Allah - it is best for him in the sight of his Lord.

This verse emphasizes the importance of upholding the truth and adhering to the sacred teachings of Allah, which ultimately leads to honor and success.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder to Muslims that resorting to falsehood will not bring about true power or honor. It is a thought-provoking Hadith that highlights the importance of truthfulness and integrity in all aspects of life.

When a person resorts to falsehood, they may initially gain some temporary benefits or advantages. However, these gains are short-lived and ultimately lead to a loss of credibility, trust, and respect. Falsehood may seem appealing in the short term, but it is a weak foundation that crumbles under scrutiny.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, understood the consequences of falsehood. He recognized that true power and honor lie in upholding the truth, even in the face of adversity. By adhering to the principles of honesty, justice, and righteousness, one gains the respect and admiration of others.

Moreover, the consequences of resorting to falsehood extend beyond personal reputation. It can have far-reaching societal implications, leading to division, injustice, and corruption. Falsehood undermines the fabric of society, eroding trust and creating a culture of deceit.

Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are reminded to always seek the truth, speak the truth, and act in accordance with the truth. By doing so, they will not only attain true power and honor in the sight of Allah, but also contribute to the betterment of society as a whole.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a timeless reminder for Muslims to uphold the truth and avoid resorting to falsehood. It emphasizes the importance of integrity, honesty, and righteousness in all aspects of life. By adhering to these principles, Muslims can attain true power and honor, both in this world and the hereafter. May Allah guide us all to the path of truth and grant us the strength to resist falsehood.
