اَلصَّبْرُ مَدْفَعَةٌ۔
Patience is a means of repelling [adversities].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الصَّبْرُ مَدْفَعَةٌ۔" which translates to
Patience is a means of repelling [adversities].
This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for Muslims in dealing with the challenges and trials of life.
The word (sabr) "صَبْرُ" is derived from the root word "ص ب ر" which means to restrain, endure, or persevere. It encompasses the idea of remaining steadfast and composed in the face of difficulties, hardships, and temptations. Sabr is not simply passive endurance, but an active virtue that requires self-control, resilience, and trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The term (madfahah) "مَدْفَعَةٌ" is derived from the root word "د ف ع" which means to repel, ward off, or protect. It signifies that patience acts as a shield or fortress against adversities, deflecting their harmful effects and safeguarding the individual from their negative impact.
The importance of patience in Islam is emphasized in numerous verses of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153),
O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
This verse highlights the close connection between patience and seeking Allah's assistance. Patience is not a passive resignation, but an active means of seeking Allah's support and guidance.
In Surah Al-Imran (3:200), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) assures the believers,
O you who have believed, be patient and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.
Here, patience is linked to success and is presented as a necessary quality for believers to cultivate.
The concept of patience is beautifully illustrated in the life of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). Despite facing numerous trials and tribulations, including betrayal, false accusations, and imprisonment, Yusuf (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) remained patient and steadfast in his faith. Eventually, his patience led to his elevation and the fulfillment of Allah's promise.
Similarly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) exemplified the virtue of patience throughout his life. His unwavering patience in the face of adversity, oppression, and betrayal serves as a timeless example for Muslims. Despite the challenges he faced, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) remained steadfast in upholding justice, defending the truth, and preserving the teachings of Islam.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that patience is not only a virtue but also a powerful tool for repelling adversities. When faced with trials, hardships, or temptations, patience enables us to maintain our composure, make wise decisions, and seek Allah's guidance. It shields us from the negative effects of adversities and helps us navigate through challenging times with grace and resilience.
Moreover, patience is not limited to enduring difficulties; it also encompasses restraining ourselves from sinful actions and controlling our desires. It is through patience that we can resist the temptations of this world and strive for righteousness. By practicing patience, we develop self-discipline and strengthen our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of patience as a means of repelling adversities. It urges Muslims to cultivate this virtue and rely on it as a shield against the challenges of life. By exercising patience, we not only seek Allah's assistance but also attain success and spiritual growth. Let us strive to embody the patience of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), the Ahl al-Bayt, and the righteous companions, and may Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to endure and overcome all trials.
